Advice bureau needs more volunteers

by Catherine Singleton

NEW advisers are needed to help out at the Ribble Valley’s Citizens Advice Bureau. A dedicated team of 12 already

staff the Clitheroe-based bureau, but officials want to boost the total by at least another four. Since the bureau first opened more

than two decades ago, there have been more than 95,000 queries, rang ing from benefit and employment matters, to housing, consumer and legal issues. Manager Shirley Wallbank, said:

“It is a tremendous achievement to have helped the local community with so many queries and we have always been grateful to our volun

Lottery wins

THE weekly winners of the East Lancashire Hospice Lottery were: £1,000 Mrs Dobson, Rishton; £250 Mrs McCartney, Leyland and £100 Mrs Lang- horn, Blackburn. If you would like to sup port your local hospice by joining the lottery, please call Gill on 01254 342847.

teer advisers for their immense con tribution. Over the years we have had more than 80 volunteers work ing with us and many stay with us for lengthy periods due to the sense of satisfaction and the challenge that they get from the work.” One such volunteer is Katharine

Dyson, who has just retired from the bureau after 20 years. She said: “For anyone interested

in people and their problems there can surely be no more interesting and enjoyable work. People from all walks of life present an enormously diverse number of queries - some answerable by a single word, others need weeks to work out.” She added that members of the

public believe advisors must be able to deal with every problem “off the

cuff”, but a comprehensive and con stantly updated information system is available and initial training gives a thorough guide about using it. Daphne Rix, who will be helping

to train the new advisors, said: “We want people who enjoy a challenge, who are willing to learn and we will offer them full training. We need people to be able to volunteer about seven hours per week, preferably split into two sessions.” Anyone interested should contact

the bureau manager to arrange an informal chat to discuss exactly what is involved. If you would like to volunteer, or

find out more, contact the CAB on 01200 428966 or visit them at 19-21 Wesleyan Row, Parson Lane, Clitheroe.

Latest d a te s for blood donor s e s s io n s

NEW and existing blood donors are being urged to attend donor sessions at West Bradford Village Hall next Friday, November 17th. They will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and

from 5-30 to 7-30 p.m. at the hall, in Grindleton Road. Rachel Roberts, communications officer

for the National Blood Service, said: “Although at present blood stocks are rea sonably healthy and we are meeting the

Lifestyle Fitness-

demand from hospitals, it is important that more donors come forward over the next few weeks. December is always a challenging time for us because the festive season is so busy, and many people strug gle to find time to donate.” For more information about becoming a

blood donor please contact the donor helpline on 0845 7711711. General infor mation can also be found online at: www.blood.co.uk

New partnership takes off

A CLITHEROE-BASED company held two open days to launch a new product. Around 400 people visited Stead-

plan Ltd, at its base on the Salthill Industrial Estate, where it has been located for more than 20 years. The event was held to celebrate a

new dealership with Belgian trailer company STAS. Steadplan Ltd has been appointed

as the STAS UK Northern Sales Dis tributor. Hauliers from as far afield as Scot

land and Lincolnshire converged on the Ribble Valley for the event, some taking the opportunity to ride and drive the new products, as well as enjoying a beef and hog roast buffet. Formed in 1980, Steadplan Ltd

continues to be committed to all its customers, from owner drivers to national fleet operators, providing a one-stop truck shop and offering a wide range of services. Our photograph shows the Stead

plan team at the open weekend. (S300906/3b)

Why giving to the Poppy Appeal is still important

THE Royal British Legion is the major voice for ex-Service people throughout the year, campaigning on issues including Gulf War related illnesses, war pensions and noise induced hearing loss. It will continue to press for change

as long as the needs of veterans and their dependants remain unrecog nised. Today, British men and women con

tinue to serve their country, in Iraq, the. Falklands, the Gulf, Rwanda, Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Afghanistan. The Legion will be needed for as

long as people continue to be affected by conflict. I t doesn’t advocate war but is simply there to support those
