Ian will be pounding streets for charity
by Faiza Afzaal
CLITHEROE man Ian Haythornth- waite is slipping on his running shoes to take part in the London Marathon. The former Clitheroe Royal Grammar
School pupil will pound the streets of London when he takes part in the 26-mile race next month in aid of Asthma UK - for the third time in six years. But Ian (34), pictured, is certainly no
stranger to Strenuous exercise. In 2000 he took part in a four-day 33km
journey into the Andes, climbing 13,000ft. to the lost Inca city of Machu Piccu to raise money for the Ghildren’s Society. Ian, of Grafton Street, was once man
ager of the Glitheroe branch of Skipton Building Society before leaving to work as an auditor at the Leeds headquarters of the Halifax Building Society. He decided to go back to university

YOUNG netball enthusiasts at St James CE Primary School in Clitheroe are some of the smartest around thanks to local company Johnson Matthey. The Pimlico Road-based compa
ny donated more, than £500 to the school to buy a whole new netball kit including skirts, tops and track- suits, made up by Tots-to-Teens in Clitheroe. Headmaster Mr Paul Adnitt said
the school was very grateful to Johnson Matthey, whose represen tatives often attended the school’s industry days, for their generosity. He added that Mr Tony Flanni-
gan from Johnson Matthey, who presented the kit to the school’s net- ballers on Friday, had also given pupils an insight into some of the company’s products, which are helping to improve the environ ment. A spokesman for Johnson
Matthey said; “As a company John son Matthey feels strongly about supporting the local community and is proud to promote and sup-

ing Ribble Valley - joined forces to buy in bulk items that they all needed at the best possible price. Now the initiative - the “East Lancashire
e-Partnership” - has won a “highly com mended” award in the Procurement Section of the 2005 Local Government Chronicle Awards. Sponsored by several organisations, including the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the awards attracted thousands of entries from councils across the UK. The East Lancashire e-Partnership, com prising the borough councils of Ribble Valley,
Burnley, Hyndbum, Pendle and Rossendale, has been behind a series of innovative "reverse e-auctions" that look set to slash up to £250,000 from council procurement costs. Reverse e-auctions are a process, whereby
sellers vie for business by undercutting each other in a live Internet auction. The Government wants them to become
common practice in local government. Reverse e-auctions in East Lancashire have so far cut £80,000 from council procurement costs, with savings of £250,000 expected. The East Lancashire e-Partnership is also
in the process of establishing an “e-market place”, where local suppliers can place infor mation about goods and services electroni cally.
