ENCOURAGING young pupils' interest in chemistry was the object of a five-day event organised by SETPOINT. Primary Chemistry at Work was

staged at the Clayton Park Conference and Learning Centre. On the first day, more than 200 pupils attended from pri mary schools across Lancashire, including Brennand's Endowed School, Slaidburn. More than 1,000 youngsters took advan

tage of the event, learning how chemistry is used on a daily basis. There were plenty of hands-on oppor

tunities with presentations being given in a lively and innovative Way to stimulate the pupils’ interest and encourage them to consider a future career which includes a background in chemistry. Presenters included the University of Central Lancashire, Blackburn College,

Lancashire Fire and Rescue, Lords House Farm and Lancashire Healthcare Scien tists. Mrs Barbara Milne-Redhead, of Brennand’s Endowed School in Slaid burn, said: "It enhances the teaching when we return to the classroom as the presentations tie in closely to the national curriculum and help to complete a better

picture for the pupils.” The response from schools was so over

whelming that there was a reserve list of

■ over 500 pupils and SETPOINT, part of the Science, Engineering and Technology Network, is now considering a Physics at Work Event to cope with demand for Sci ence Events linked to the national cur riculum. www.clitheroetoday.co.uk A day for superwomen! by Vivien Meath

THE "superwomen" of the WI staged one of the best shows in recent years on Saturday. Almost 12 months of planning and

hard work came to fruition with a magnificent display of exhibits in Clitheroe Royal Grammar School's Chatburn Road premises. The standard was quite exception

al. Hundreds of visitors from the area's institutes, as well as family, friends and casual visitors, lavished well-deserved praise on the many items on display. Grindleton, Rimington and

Editor proves a

fascinating guest THE guest speaker at the meeting of Clitheroe Probus was the editor of the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, Vivien Meath. She described the many changes she

has experienced in a life in journalism, basing her talk on the decision to change the Advertiser and Times from broad sheet to tabloid in March this year. The move to a tabloid format was, she

said, considered very carefully. A research company conducted in-depth interviews with a broad spectrum of readers, dis cussing the same issue in both broadsheet and tabloid formats. Results revealed that 77% of the test sample preferred the tabloid format, with 76% loyally say ing they would buy the Advertiser and Times whatever the format. The speaker described the problems

which can arise with any newspaper, and said how important it was to preserve a flexible layout. The placing of the popu lar "Family Notices" section had been one of the difficulties encountered. It has been moved from page two and now sits within the classified section, but is flagged up on pages one and two. Demand for colour is high and another

advantage of the tabloid format is that it lends itself to a good mixture of colour and black and white pages. On the editorial front, she explained

how circumstances had led to an almost complete change of reporting staff within her first 12 months as editor and praised the enthusiasm of the current young team. Computers now reign supreme in the

newsroom and the availability of digital cameras and the submission of enormous numbers of photographs by members of the public, are among new challenges faced. She also said how delighted she was that the circulation was, for a weekly local paper, nearly at saturation level with sales of around 10,000 weekly to a population of 42,000 in the Ribble Valley circulation area. After an extremely interesting insight

into not just the change in format, but into many other facets of a local newspa per there was only time for a very few questions. Probus member Jim Parker gave the vote of thanks, suggesting that, with her wealth of experience, the speak er should surely be invited to give a fur ther talk on the subject. The Probus annual summer lunch is on

August 6th at Eaves Hall. Late bookings should be made via Jim Parker (01200 445401). The next normal Probus meet ing is at the Pendle Club, Lowergate, Clitheroe, on August 20th, at 10-45 a.m. (note early start) when club member Cliff Astin will present a talk with slides on "Folklore and Wild Flowers". Inquiries to the secretary, Alan Daniels, 01200429207.

TOTAL POINTS COLLECTED

Balderstone (Bal) 850; Billington (B) 2154; Downham (D) 932; Fence (F) 3,233; Gisburn (G) 1,029; Gt Harwood (GH) 2,989; Grindleton (GRIN) 798; Hurst Green (HG) 2,226; Mitton (M) 801; Oswaldtwistle (OZ) 300; Rimington (RIM) 164; Simonstone (S) 2,215; Waddington (W) 32

Oswaldtwistle WIs were welcomed into the fold by show chairman Mrs Pam Jelley who added th a t Oswaldtwistle WI is also the newest one in the county federation.

For those who still regard the

Women's Insititute as a somewhat "fuddy duddy" organisation, Mrs Jel ley told the audience at the show's presentation of trophies th a t Clitheroe Area WI Show organisers certainly listen to members. "We drop things like bottled fruit

and dressmaking from the show schedule when they become irrele vant and we constantly introduce new classes like the paper patchwork and the tactile books," she said. The tactile books are to be given to blind or visually-impaired children, while the paper patchwork exhibits were among the most admired in the show. This year saw the floral co-opera

tive entries moved from the main hall into the adjoining corridor, giving visitors more space to enjoy them, and the flower arrangers more room to work.

Fence and District WI swept the

board gaining most points in show and four trophies, the institute's suc cess including Jean Hartley's best craft in show for a silver box, spoon and napkin ring. Best in Show went to Rita Mars-

land, of Hurst Green WI whose painting of her two grandchildren and a lamb was among the items of work most commented upon. Paythorne resident Maureen

Bowe's patience with tapestry was certainly justified with the first place in "tapestry from a kit" - her detailed picture of robins brought just one word from the judges: "Congratula tions!" The judges' critical comments

were, as ever, pored over by exhibitors and visitors, not all agree ing with some of the suggestions made!
