Just to say happy birthday "our first one apart". It's true what they say memories are a keepsake.

Ian’s thrilling Tour de Force

A GISBURN businessman has fulfilled every cyclist's dream by taking part in a spe cial race run over a stage of this year's Tour de France. Keen cyclist Ian Wilson, the managing

director of Nelson-based engineering com pany Fort Vale, took part in the Etape du Tour this month. The race is an annual event organised by

the Velo Club of France. The club takes a stage of the Tour de France and uses it for an amateur race a couple of days prior to the professional event. Entry is by application only and limited

to 8,500. This year the organisers chose the longest

stage in the tour from Limoges in central France to Saint Fleur - a distance of 238 kilometres, with a series of climbs amount ing to 14,000 feet. "Not many people can say they have raced over a stage of the Tour de France. I

suppose it's every cyclist's dream and I was delighted to get the chance to take part in the Etape du Tour this year," says Ian, whe finished the course in a time of nine hours 56 minutes. "It was a very long, very tough day, but it

is one th a t I will never forget. The atmo sphere among the other racers and specta tors along the route made it very special. Ian, who lives near Gisburn, added: "I had

trained for about five months prior to the race and during th a t time I rode some 3,500kms, so I was well prepared." Competitors were given a time limit of 12

hours and 30 minutes to complete the course and 6,500 of the starters managed it. Three days later when the official Tour

raced the stage it was won by French ridei Richard Virenque in a fraction over six hours! Pictured is Ian Wilson, centre, crossing the finishing line, (s)

RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans has hit out at Gov ernment plans for council tax, which could see some bills trebling. He said: “Since 1997 the

cost of council tax overall has gone up by 70%. “The Government’s new plans for council tax will be

another hard-hitting tax on middle Britain. “The dramatic rise in

house prices over recent years means that many peo ple’s property have greatly increased in value whilst their income has stayed the same. “Families who have

worked hard all their life and lived in the same prop erty will lose out.” He added: “I t was in the

Ribble Valley that the peo ple sent a clear message to the Government in 1991 th a t they would not stand for huge increases in their council bills.”
