ALTHOUGH the weather was dull when residents at the village of Bolton-By-Bow- land staged their annual sports day, colour ful fancy dress costumes certainly bright ened the atmosphere.

The rain put a stop to the sports races,

but it did not dampen the spirits of young sters who turned out in weird and wonder ful costumes - proving very difficult for judge Mrs Barbara Evans to pick a winner.

tranquillise the animals and direct them back into the trailer.

Armed with loaded rifles, police marks

men were also called out to shoot the Charolais cow and calf if they began to run wild and become a danger to the public. At the time, Chief Insp. Richard Mor

gan, said: “We are only here to keep things under control.

“Our officers are armed with rifles, but

only have authority to shoot if the animals run into the A671 Pimlico Link Road junction, causing a danger to the public, especially motorists.” Attempts by Mr Boddy to tranquillise

the animals proved successful and subse quently the runaways were herded back into the trailer. Our picture shows Mr Boddy, armed with tranquilliser gun. (CR230704/1)

Weather stays fine for rambling group

THE weather was dry for eight members of Clitheroe Ramblers who walked in the Derbyshire countryside. From Gateham, Mr Pete Goodhill led the group past Wet- ton Mill, Grindo'n. They then went to

Thors Cave above the Manifold Valley, on to Alston Field to join Wolfscote Dale at Gypsy Bank. The group returned through Narrowdale with tea at Hartington. Last Sunday they visited the Lake District.

premises to rent, which should be ground floor and with easy access. Carers Link offers a wide range of sup

port to carers and young carers including information, training, a listening ear and the opportunity to ensure that carers’ voices and views are heard. The organisation is in contact with well

over a 1,000 carers through its free quar terly carers newsletters and also arranges

carers events, support meetings and time out days. Manager Kathleen Eastwood said: “Since we opened Carers Link’s Princess Royal Trust Centre for Carers in Hyndbum in October 2002, we have been acutely aware that although we have tried to offer similar services to carers and young carers both in Hyndbum and Rib ble Valley this has been difficult with only a base in Accrington. “We are delighted that this funding

from the Ribble Valley Strategic Partner ship will enable us to open an outreach office in Ribble Valley, which will give a focal point for carers and in particular enable them to access one-to-one support, information and our drop-in services.” If anyone can help the organisation to

identify premises, please call 01254 387444.

Heads bid farewell

HEAD teachers from across the Ribble Valley and Hyndbum met to say farewell to a fellow head. They gathered to say goodbye

to Mrs Dorothy Mortiboy. She is looking forward to retir

ing after 13 years as head teacher of St Mary's RC Primary School in Osbaldeston. The head teachers are pictured

holding figures from a carved nativity set, which was presented to Mrs Mortiboy as a leaving gift. Our picture shows, from left to '

GAUDI is perhaps the world’s most celebrated artist when it comes to mosaics. For many who have visited Barcelona, an abiding memory is Gaudi’s magnificent mosaic installa tions across the city. Had you visited Oakhill College,Whal ley, recently, you might have thought you were in the Basque

capital. As part of Activity Week for Years 3 and 4, the children enjoyed a day of mosa ic-making led by art specialists Pat Southern and Julian Pearce. They worked on 500mm square boards to create a stunning display, which is being put up in the school’s preparatory department.
