Tributes to a popular veteran
by Faiza Afzaal
TRIBUTES have poured in following the death of popular war veteran Mr Anthony Blacklock, who has died at
the age of 87. Mr Blacklock, (pictured), was born in
1916 and was one of three brothers and three sisters of the Blacklock family. Described as a very bright pupil, he was
educated at Clitheroe’s St Michael and St John’s School until the age of 14. He then worked at Primrose Cotton Mill
until 1940 when he joined the Army and served in the Royal Engineers’ Explosive Division in Aldershot. He was stationed in Devon for a few years where he met his future wife, Gwen.

MEMBERS of speakers’ clubs in the North Pennine area took to the streets of Clitheroe. They were looking for answers to 50 clues
in a quiz devised by Clitheroe Speakers’ Club in which 38 members and friends from clubs throughout the area took part. This was the 15th annual event held by
the club in villages in the locality and once again it was blessed with good weather. The first and second prizewinners scored
the same number of points, so the result was decided on the time taken. The winning team was David Grainger
(Castle Club, Blackburn) and Marlene Birtwell (Burnley Ladies' Speakers Club), with the runners-up being Derrick and Gene Holmes and Chris Carr (Clitheroe
Club) and Janet Clegg. Pictured is incom ing Clitheroe club president Robert Mor peth (centre rear) with David and Marlene (right), Derrick and Gene (left) and Chris (centre front), (s)
