IT might not be the biggest agricultural show in the coun try, but Hodder Valley Show certainly ranks as one of the

best. Visitors and exhibitors could

not fail to be impressed by the pic turesque rural landscape before they arrived at the exceptionally scenic Dunsop Bridge show-

ground. Organisers were not blessed

with a repeat of last year's hot, sunny weather for the 60th show. Instead, the wind blew, the tem

perature dropped, and a combina t ion of rain with occasional lengthy dry spells ensured that everyone was left in no doubt that this was a typical British Septem

ber day. Months of planning had gone

into the diamond anniversary show and visitors turned out in their hundreds. All aspects of farm life were rep resented, with schools and the

community as a whole putting major input into the show, via exhibitions in the various mar

quees. For farming families it offered a

day away from the rules and reg ulations now placing a strangle hold on the industry, and a chance

to chat and relax. Pride of place on the field went

to show president Allan Carr. A committee member for yeare, Mr Carr comes from a long line of Hodder Valley farmers and Satur day was certainly his day. With cattle, sheep, shire horses,

pets and a myriad of stalls, there was something for all the family, while Slaidburn Silver Band entertained throughout the after

noon. In the arena, there was a con

s tan t ly changing display with stuntman Ian Jay's "sponge plunge" from 50ft up a ladder among the day's highlights. Bowland High School pupils

demonstrated why the school has gained an excellent reputation for performing arts, while primary

school pupils throughout the Hod- der Valley competed against each other in a well supported chil

dren's section. Heather Alpe amazed th e

judges as she took best in show in the senior section — her entries in the miniature garden, art and dec orated biscuit all.particularly out standing. I t was, however, her item made from rubbish a life like red tractor with opening cab door and attention paid to minute detail, that won her the top prize.

■ Young farmers put together a "Then and Now" exhibiton, fea turing farming families through out the Hodder Valley, alongside a picture montage of "Show Day". The fell race, organised by Bow-

land Fell Runners, provided a magnificent route for local ath letes, with much of the race visible to spectators down below. Winner was Phillip Winskill, of

Dark Peak Runners, in 38min. 09sec. Local runner Steve Sweeney, of Bowland Fell Run ners, came in first veteran over 40 and second overall with 39min.

{0\5sec. and Chris Mille , L aney 44min.lOsec. Horticultural entries were down

in some sections, due partly to the poor weather. There were plenty of exhibits in the baking section with particularly magnificent fruit cakes and intense rivalry in the men's baking sect ion with David Taylor's lemon sponge tak ing pride of place, followed by John Parry and Kevin Johnson, a Swiss roll and fruit cake respec tively. The egg section was domi- ' nated by S tev en and Michael Roberts, apart from hens' eggs which Tim Ankers managed to

win. Prize-winning sheep were treat

ed to a new trophy after more than 30 years -with the same one. United U t il it ie s donated a new trophy for the overall champion sheep. Nick Robinson presented the trophy to Tom Robinson and his son, Thomas, of Catlow Farm, for their winning Swaledales.

prize cow! PM&M, which has offices in

Blackburn, Burnley, Clitheroe and Nelson, handed over cash prizes for the winners of three of the dairy classes at the annual agricultural event in Dunsop Bridge. The company sponsored classes

four, five and six: dairy heifer in milk, dairy cow in calf and dairy cow in milk. The company’s marketing man

ager Beverly Calvert says: “We sponsor quite a lot of events at both Gisburn and Clitheroe auc tion markets and we-attend the auctions once a month.

“We have a specialist agriculture team and a growing client base of

farmers. “We decided to sponsor the

Hodder Valley Show because we wanted to give something back to the farming community.” PM&M is also busy preparing

for its annual Dairy Seminar which takes place this year on Cctober 5th. The event, which is being staged

at Mytton Fold Farm, Langho, is one of the highlights of the local farming calendar. This year, the agricultural devel

opment manager for Asda, Chris Brown, John Allen, of Kite Con sulting and Jim Mitchell, a suc cessful dairy farmer from Rox burghshire, will be addressing the audience.
