Blues trio set for Boxing Day return?
By CHRIS BODEN
THE weather denied Clitheroe the opportunity to maintain the pressure on Mossley at the top of the table on Saturday. But one blessing in disguise after
the postponement of the derby clash at Ramsbottom is that suspensions to Neil Spencer, Chris Whittingham and Glen Ainsworth elapsed. And all three come into contention
for Boxing Day’s home clash with fifth place Curzon Ashton. Adam Gardner is also hoping
to.be
fit, while Barrie Hart is available again, although Neil Reynolds has other commitments. Boss Lee Sculpher was disappoint
ed not to get the chance to avenge the 3-2 defeat'Ramsbottom inflicted at Shawbridge in September, but looked on the bright side: “At least the sus pended players didn’t miss a game, and the injured lads have another extra week to recover. “And we go into the New Year
unbeaten away from home in the league! “But it was very disappointing to
have the game called off so late by the match referee. . “I t was a catch 22 situation for him, and it was touch and go, but he
• decided to err on the side of cnution. “I was surprised it was called off,
but you have no control over the ele ments.” And he looked ahead to the visit of
Curzon Ashton: “They are doing very well, and they are not normally as high up the table, so they will be enjoying their season. ' “It will be difficult, and they have
two strikers, John Mitten and Nick Fisher, who have scored a lot of goals between them, and hopefully we can keep them quiet. “We’re just looking to continue
where we left off after the 5-1 win over St Helens. “I’m perhaps being greedy, but we
missed a few chances in that game, and sooner or later we will score another hatful.” But, with the return of Lee Cryer,
Sculpher now feels he has a stronger squad than at the start of the season, and that the Blues are equipped to go the distance in the title race. Looking back over a fine 12
months, Sculpher said: “I t ’s been a great year for us. “I would hazard a guess that we’ve
probably only lost half a dozen league games, and we got to the league cup final, which we are in the. last eight of this time round.

LEAGUE TABLES
Chris Whittingham “We have a lot to look forward to,
and if, 12 months ago, you had said we would be joint second, and in the cup quarter-final, we would have taken it. “It shows good continuity. “Players have left, and it forced us
to go and look for others, and to give squad players a chance, and people like John Paul Fagan have taken that chance. “And when the likes of Lee Cryer,
Chris Whittingham and Neil Reynolds came back, it improved us further. “From the beginning of August,
we have a stronger squad now.” And Sculpher feels it will be a tense
title run in: “It is going to be a tight finish. “We are chasing Mossley, and we
need to pick up enough points before their FA Vase commitments come along, to give us a chance to apply the pressure. “We only have, of the sides around
us, to go to Woodley, and we have only conceded nine goals away from home all season, and not lost. - “I think we have only lost two
games in the league away from home all year, so our form is exceptional. “Hopefully we can match that at
home as well.” Rimington in last four
Settle United___ __ .0 Rimington................ .1 A GOAL fit to win any game handed Rimington an early Christmas present - a Craven Cup semi-final berth. Settle is never an easy place to go, but the visitors
could have but the game beyond doubt after a first half that had everything. And if the first half was
the cake, then Gary Haslam’s turn and finish into the far corner from the edge of the area was the icing.

came more into the game and and spent most of the game camped in Riming-
ton’shalf. Haythomthwaite should
have put the game beyond doubt but blazed over the bar after the keeper had parried a shot. Wharton and Zulfi both
had chances near the end, but it was not heeded as
Rimington held on to progress to the final four. And the side can now
put the cup aside and con centrate on the league, with vital games against Ribble Valley Borough and Goodshaw coming up next month.
Waddington on Borough hit back promotion trail to beat leaders
Waddington............................ 5 Skipton Town .........................2 WADDINGTON maintained their Craven and District Football League promotion challenge with a ■ good win over second-placed Skip- ton. Both sides had early chances,
but it was Robert Lloyd who broke the deadlock on 10 minutes with a header.
A game of end-to-end football
soon saw the visitors equalise, but the hosts then moved into a 3-1 lead after a quickfire brace from man of the match Peter Fletcher.
registered another goal after Lloyd executed a good run and solo effort. Skipton never gave up and
After the interval, Waddington
reduced the arrears to 4-2, before a period of pressure saw Wadding- ton’s backs to the wall. However, substitute John
Leaver settled matters with a fifth goal to give the hosts a well- deserved win. Waddington’s next game is away
at Skipton Bulldogs on Saturday, January 3rd, kick-off 2 p.m. All players are to meet at the Waddington Arms at 12-30 p.m.
Stacksteads St Joseph’s . . . .3 Ribble Valley Borough . . . . .4 THERE was plenty of Christmas cheer for Ribble Valley Borough after recording this scintillating win against East Lancashire League table-toppers Stacksteads St Joseph’s. However, they started off badly
when substitute keeper Craig ' Barnes found himself picking the ball out of the net after only two minutes. And the locals were to find
themselves 2-1 down at the break, with only a Chippendale strike

Drew goes nap for United!
MAN of the match Drew Bramley scored a nap hand as Readstone United Under 10s Blue thrashed Barnoldswick Town
6-0. In what was
undoubtedly their best performance of the season, Lane Aldridge completed the rout. The Under 12s had a
• convincing-14-1 win over Barnoldswick Barons, with Sam Miller netting a four-goal haul. • Josh Brown and man
of the match Brad Coulson both scored a hat-trick, with Kamen' Collinson (2) Josh Neary ■ and Rhys Meehan completing the win. . / The Under Us ,
preserved their unbeaten tag with a 1-1 draw against Accoutre Yellow. • Sam Langford scored the only goal with Andrew , > Kardasz the man of the
match. However it was
disappointment for the Under 14s, who were unlucky to go down 1-0 to top of the table Fulledge Colts. The Under 10s

involved in a thrilling game with Fulledge Colts, only to go down 1-0.
Wolves keeper on top form
Wolves Under 11s . .5 Foulridge Minors .3
WOLVES somehow fashioned a victory, in spite of playing well below the standard of recent weeks. . Man of the match,
goalkeeper McGrath, was in inspired form but could do nothing to prevent the Minors taking a deserved lead.
• However an excellent
lead again early in the second half, but Astin brought the sides level. The same player then
put the Wolves ahead, only for Foulridge to equalise with a superb strike.

WOLVES succumbed to table toppers Borrowdale, despite matching their opponents in the opening stages. % ■■ A comer caught
Clitheroe on the hop to put the visitors in front, before Wolves were denied what looked a certain penalty at the other end. And the visitors scored
a second and killer goal just before the interval to take the spoils. Oswaldtwistle . . . . . .2 Wolves Under 16 Blue 5 CLITHEROE bounced back from defeat last . week to mount a fine team performance at Oswaldtwistle. ■ A early: goal from Simon Haslam settle Wolves, with Simon Ryan crossing for Zak to head . home the second. the hands of Haslingden. The Pumas went
back with two consolation efforts, but the scoring was wrapped up through Luke Chadwick late on. - Wolves Under 14 Red .3 St Joseph’s . . . . ; . . .2
WOLVES did well to win this tough encounter, in difficult conditions. Conor Parfit gave the
locals the lead, befor poor defending allowed St Joseph’s to score from two seperate set piece routines. Wolves tried hard in the
behind within five minutes, but equalised midway through the. half after Gary Micallef headed in an Arran McCarthy free kick. The second period saw
chances at either end, but it was the visitors who were the sharpest finishes withtwo, further efforts.* ’ " i i ' hi, r ' / , ' Tom Wallbank was the

from a Clarkson assist to show for their efforts. But the visitors seemed up for
the battle in the second half, with Chippendale going on to complete a well-deserved hat-trick. ■ A goal also from Jamie Stoddart
completed a devastating personal display, only for a late consolation leaving Borough hanging on at the end. - '

Narrow defeat for locals
THERE was no Christinas cheer for : Clitheroe A in the ' Blackburn and District Badminton League after suffering a 9-7 defeat to YMCAB. Good performances
were turned in by Louise BurriUand Stephen Pym, with two strong top half mixed wins. Pete Woods had a
double disappointment, narrowly losing 15-14 in the mixed with partner Mary Brass, and with Martin Meadows in the mens’. : The locals will look to
come back refreshed after the festive break, to improve on their mid table slot and commence i battle in the cup , ,t
, competition. In the Second Division,
Clitheroe B’s poor away form continued after going down 9-7 to lowly Telecom. However, three
partnerships had double wins, with Dave McKenzie doing so alongside both Sheila Perry and Damian Evans. ' J Mark Perry and Lisa Fielding also won both matches. . And despite their best
display of the season, the C team also went down by the same score to top of the table Stanhill B.
