FOUR children will receive life- changing surgery and many more people will have their lives made more comfortable thanks to the fund raising efforts of guests at a dinner. Nearly £2,000 was raised at the
Chamber of Commerce’s President’s Dinner, with £1,000 going to the East Lancashire Hospice and £865 to the Roof of the World charity, which repairs clefts in Asia.. Saj Butt, Chamber president, said:
“I t was a fantastic achievement by all the guests at the dinner.
.. “Roof of the World, which works in association with Child Care Inter national, provides doctors to repair clefts and it is an operation that takes only 45 minutes and costs just £200. “The money we raised will give
four children the opportunity of a full life. They’ll be able to smile, eat and speak properly and gain educa tion and employment. “I ’m also delighted that we can
contribute so much to the wonderful work of the East Lancashire Hospice,
which provides care and support to those with advanced and progressive life-threatening disease, and to their families.” Saj presented the cheque to Mohammed Khalid, vice chairman
of the Roof of the World charity, and Geoffrey Braithwaite MBE, chair man of East Lancs Hospice. Pictured, from the left, Mr Braith

Borough Council planning officers recommending approval subject to condi tions, including one relating to the control of noise through sound insulation, elected councillors who sit on the planning committee decided to refuse to grant full and listed building per mission. A petition by local resi dents, many of them elder-
ly and objecting to the plans, was taken into con sideration by councillors. Residents argued that if
they bought their houses, the local pubs closed at 11- 30 p.m. and tha t if the application was'given the go-ahead it would have a knock-on effect with nearby takeaway proprietors also wanting to extend opening times. Mr John Spensley,., of
Duck Street, attended the planning committee meet ing and told members that noise from the pub was already at significant levels. He added that the applica tion for a “nightclub” extension must mean the licensees wanted to increase their customer intake.
the application went ahead they would have to contend with additional noise and hostile anti-social behav iour, as well as a loss of amenity. They argued that when
Members of Clitheroe
(Clitheroe) claimed that the Dog pub had been the source of noise and nuisance problems for many years, although he said the situa tion had improved more recently. He added that the only
benefit of the application was that it would tidy up the rear of the building, but that the effect the proposal would have on the amenity of neighbouring residents overshadowed this benefit. Coun. Ian Brown
(Clitheroe) said the applica tion would mean more peo ple using the pub and more people spilling out onto the

(Clitheroe) pointed out that at the moment there were a number of waste bins and skips at the rear of the pub, which he presumed were used to service the building. He said if permission was granted, room would have to be found for these bins- somewhere else. “The limited yard space
will become even more lim ited at the rear because of this dance floor extension,” he added. Coun. John Hill (Simon-
stone) argued that an appli cation for listed building consent should also be refused on the grounds that it was an inappropriate design for the grade II list ed building, which has 18th Century origins, and would be harmful to its character.
