post both within and outside the Shadow Cabinet and I decided that now was the tune for me to do other things. Michael looked and said that he was very

disappointed, but the truth was that I could not carry on with the huge investment in time for Wales without the edge of having a voice at the very top. I hope the new arrangement works and'I.have'offered 100% of my effort to ensure that it becomes a reality.

One of the downsides of being in the Shad

ow Cabinet is th a t you are constrained by appearances on the “box" and making state ments about things outside your sphere of influence. Now I can make remarks about the ludicrous decision of the Red Cross not to sell Christmas cards from their shops depicting nativity scenes just in case it annoyed non- Christians. How stupid is that. .They managed to offend every Christian in

the UK with one dull decision taking no regard to what happens to be the dominant and national religion of this country. To argue that their neutrality may be compromised by selling religious Christmas cards is absurd to the point th a t nonreligious people may be offended by them selling Christmas cards at all. Get real Red Cross and give people a

choice. I am now enjoying the new-found freedom

S IN G IN G morn in g, noon and night was the challenge facing four young vocalists a t Whalley Parish

Church. They undertook a 12-hour spon

sored “singathon” to raise funds for the historic church and hope to raise more than £400 once all the money is in.

Pictured from the left, the four

were Emma Middleton (20), Garry Peel (21), Natalie Howard (19) and Sarah Purcell (20). They tuned up ready for an 8-30

a.m. s ta r t and managed to stay in fine voice until 9 p.m., with only a half-hour break for Saturday’s Fami ly Service a t the church. “I t went very well, even b e tte r th an we had hoped,” said singer

Garry. “We had quite a few people in

throughout the day to support us and even though we were very tired at the end, we still had voices.” All four have sung regularly at the

church, although two are now away at university for most of the year.

They enjoyed the day, singing a

mixture of seasonal carols, tradition al hymns and more modern worship

songs. . “We want to thank everyone who

sponsored us and especially all the keyboard players who accompanied us throughout the day,” said Garry. Rev. Chris Sterry, the vicar a t

Whalley, said: “The singing was obviously enjoyed by people who came for a while and joined in, or stayed for a long period.” (A131203/5)

I am working as hard as ever, but I do not need to get up a t five in the morning to drive to Wales to do one speech and then drive all the way back to Pendleton. time. Yes, I did shout for England. I stationed myself in the post office in Bolton-by-Bow- land (thank you Tim and Angela) with a group of happy revellers to watch the match and shout for our national side. I could not have been happier if Wales had

won the cup. Jonny Wilkinson was magic as was the entire side that gave him the support to do what he needed to do - kick the balls for England to clinch victory. I was proud, and enjoyed the company of the Bolton-by-Bow- land villagers as we all celebrated the well- deserved win in the Coach and Horses just up the road from the post office. I awaited the new Parliamentary term with

some anxiety. After all, it does take a special sort of genius to have to fly the Sports Minis ter all the way home from Australia to vote for foundation hospitals when you have a majority of 161 over all the other parties. If they can get it that wrong then the next year

will be very interesting - and if they are so stupid to try to bring back the fox hunting bill or even top-up fees for our students then I will - be very, very busy indeed.

DETECTIVES were waiting outside a prison to question a 23-year-old woman about offences linked to a theft in Clitheroe. Shelly Leanne Morrison was arrested outside

Styal Prison where she had just completed a sen tence. Blackburn magistrates heard that Morrison

was later charged with offences that followed shortly after a purse containing bank cards and three £1,000 rings was stolen in Clitheroe. Morrison, of Brownhill Avenue, Burnley,

pleaded guilty to theft of cigarettes and cash worth £72 from Tesco in Clitheroe and ciga rettes and cash worth £82 from the Co-op in Padiham. She was given a conditional discharge for 18 months and ordered to pay £154 compen sation. MrNeil White (prosecuting), said the offences

were committed in October, before Morrison received a prison sentence. A woman in the toi lets at Morrisons in Clitheroe had removed her rings and placed them in her purse while she washed her hands. The purse was stolen and 20 minutes later Morrison used a switch card taken ; from the purse at Tesco. Shortly after she used the same card in Padiham. “She was sent to prison bn November 5th and

arrested at the gates of Styal on December 9th,” said Mr White. “She admitted using the card but denied any involvement in the theft of the purse.”

1 'Mr Bill Grice (defending), said Morrison had

been committing offences of theft to fund her heroin habit since she was 18. He said the dis trict judge who sent her to prison had expressed the hope that the short sentence would help her get away from heroin. ' “She is now free of any abuse and is looking

to make a fresh start,” said Mr Grice. “I think it is fair to say that had these matters been before. the district judge she would not have received1 any longer.”
