FOOTBALL fanatics Con-, nor Hitchen (eight) and Steve Thompson. (14) wowed Blackburn Rovers players and coaches with their fancy footwork as the H2 Soccer Idols heats got off to a flying s ta r t a t St Bede’s High School, Black burn. The pair, both from

Budding soccer idols Autumn Courses

chosen as the most promising young players from the Black burn heat was no mean feat - they were up against some tough competition. “H2 Soccer Idols is all about

rewarded when Blackburn Hovers striker Matt Jansen pre sented them with their winners’ medals and T-shirts. Connor and Steve will now go

on to take part in a Blackburn Rovers’ Academy training day where they will really be treated to a fun day working closely with Premiership club coaches and scouts. The two also won tickets to a Rovers’ home match, togeth er with a thirst-busting supply of H2 soft drinks including H2 4 Kids and H2 Sports Drink. H2 - the new drinks brand

Clitheroe, proved to be two of' the best young players on the pitch in the first round of the ‘Pop Idol’ style search of the region for future footballing talent. And their hard work was

encouraging kids to get out and about and enjoy a healthier lifestyle, and of course giving them the chance to play in front of professional players and coach es. But most of all i t is about having fun.” Anthony Barlow, head of foot

ball in the community at Black burn Rovers, added: “To see so many youngsters out there on the pitch playing their hearts out was so encouraging. I am looking forward to seeing what Connor and Steve can show us a t the Rovers Academy. “Of course we are keen to fos

ter home-grown talent but we also want to see as many boys and girls of all ages getting involved in the game. H2 Soccer Idols really helps do that.” The three remaining H2 Soc

from Pendle-based soft drinks makers, Macaw - teamed up with Blackburn Rovers FC and 97.4 Rock FM to stage H2 Soc cer Idols heats throughout the region. The aim is to discover potentially talented young play ers who will then go on to a spe cial training day at the Rovers Academy and possibly have a shot at future soccer stardom. At the event, helping hand out

H2 drinks to keep everyone happy and hydrated was Marnie Mumby, Sales and Marketing Director at Macaw. Marnie said: “The two boys really impressed us all and to be

Santa Special is on its way

THE Santa Special will be back in the Rib-

ble Valley this Christmas! Organiser Ribble Valley Rail is returning

to the usual format, after a break due to var ious uncertainties last year. Santa will join the train at Blackburn and

meet with all the children aboard on the journey to Clitheroe. Mince pies and a glass of sherry or a soft

drink will be offered to all the adults, and all the children will receive “goody-bags” from Santa. Also, everyone will be offered the chance to support RVR by buying raffle tickets. This year, rather than run on the usual

three Saturdays before Christmas, officials of the group are planning a change. On Sun day, December 7th, a large “shopping expe rience” is being planned for Clitheroe and there will be Santa trains that day. For once, many of the shops in Clitheroe

/ T - X fS

will be open on a Sunday, and the centre of activities will be on the market, just across from the station. There will be market stalls, a craft fair, and entertainment. There will be plenty of variety - bookings

for pitches have come from as far afield as France and Germany! Santa trips organiser Ted Buckley says:

“This shopping event is an ideal opportunity for the railway to show its true worth, in bringing into town lots of people from all over the north west. “We are planning a special shuttle service,

operating between Blackburn and Clitheroe three times during the day, and connecting conveniently in at Blackburh with services from Manchester (to Colne) and from the Burnley line. “There is also the possiblity of connec

tions from the Preston area, so it has the potential to be a great day for all concerned. A definite announcement will be made near er the time.” Following on from this, Ribble Valley Rail

is planning to run the three usual Santa ser vices on the following two Saturdays, December 13th and 20th.

Ramblers take to the towpath

ELEVEN keen members of Clitheroe Ram blers set off from Feniscowles and walked along the towpath of the Leeds and Liver pool Canal. Many new housing estates have been built

with attractive gardens bordering on the canal. At the site of the former Star Mill, the rings which secured barges to the canal side were still to be seen. The group turned south to go through

fields to the M65, where the quarry which provided stone for the motorway is now being filled up as a landfill site. The spectacular viaduct has metal beams

two-and-a-half to three metres thick. This is an area of the Roddlesworth Woods which, in the 1990s, regularly featured in the national news when the “tree people” tried to prevent the motorway being built. The woods are a natural haven for wildlife.

The Chorley-Blackburn line, closed by Dr Beeching, has been left to nature. Red Lee Farm was being rebuilt as a pri
