Police doing well crime

MEMBERS of Lancashire Police Authority have reported a good year in

terms of local policing for Lancashire. Crime figures are down, detection rates

made up of local people, has published its annual report looking back on policing for the county for 2002/2003. Chairman Dr Ruth Henig said: "One of the

up and satisfaction among Lancashire resi dents holding steady - but they believe that there is still room for improvement. • The police authority, an independent body

key jobs of the police authority is to report back on the extent to which the policing plan for the year was actually carried out. I t is all too easy to make big plans at the beginning of the year, and then to lose sight of them once the year begins to unfold. We try very hard not to do that in Lancashire." Local people will be able to view the full

report, which is available on the police authority's new website

www.lancspa.gov.uk It gives details of the three main aims for

at

the policing of Lancashire, drawn up by the police authority following widespread consul tation with local people. The main aims this year were to reassure

the public, particularly those who are vulner able; to reduce crime, particularly those offences that are of concern to the public; and to make roads safer, particularly for children. In terms of reassuring the public, the police

authority reports that the fear of crime did not increase in Lancashire during the year,

and that satisfaction with the police remained generally at a high level. People's satisfaction with the police's initial response to 999 calls in particular went up from 76% to 88%, although there was a drop in satisfaction with the way the police responded to reports of a burglary (from 92% to 88%). The authority does have some concern about the low levels of satisfaction on the way the police deal with racist incidents -60% - although this is typi cal of the country as a whole. But the authority believes that the indica

times, with the police answering 90% of 999 calls within the target figure of 10 seconds - a big improvement on the figure of 79% in 2001/02. In terms of levels of crime, the Lancashire

cle crimes fell by 9%, and burglaries were cut by 22%. At the same time, the police's detec tion rate for each of these types of crime rose, only just missing the tough target set for them. Roads in Lancashire also became safer, par

position is encouraging. Violent crime has dropped by 0.4%, vehi

by 8% was more than met, with a reduction' of 12% actually recorded and there was an 18% reduction in serious collisions involving children, against the original target of a 10% reduction.

Cycling round Calcutta

AT the meeting of Clitheroe and District Probus Club on Friday, members were treated to a travelogue of a rather dif ferent kind than the usual one. Mr John Parry of Slaidburn

was one of a 25-strong, intre pid, mixed group of cyclists which toured the area around Calcutta on a sponsored ride to help leper hospitals and colonies. The trip raised a total sum

of £90,000 for the care and treatment of the terrible dis ease. He showed evocative pic tures via laptop computer of people and places en route. The very basic hospitals cost

about £15,000 to build and equip so the group could feel

well satisfied with its efforts. Mr Parry explained that lep rosy was curable but not reversible, so that if treated in the early stages with modern drugs, the damage could be limited, though not removed. However, the area they visit
