prepare for all-Valley showpiece
TH E Jennings Ribblesdale League Lawren-
. son Cup will be an all-Ribble Valley affair, between Salesbury and Ribblesdale Wander ers Seconds. - .
, - . •
Both teams had convincing victories in their' respective semi-finals. .
. Salesbury won by'10 wickets after bowling Settle out for 104 while Wanderers dismissed
. Cherry-Tree for 221 after they had posted 256^ ' Paul Spencer led the way for Wanderers .with.
52 and there were also useful contributions from Barry Spencer (45),' Robert Lloyd (43) and Craig Hall (40). And then Hall - later named man-of-the-
match by the umpires - claimed 4-51 and Matt Stafford snapped up two wickets as Cherry Tree fell 35 runs short. The final will be played on Sunday, August 4th, at a venue to be decided. '
. Interestingly, a! dress rehearsal for the final
took place a day earlier, however, the weather wreaked havoc with most of the First Division fixtures. . -
. Wanderers were 51-2 in reply to Salesbury’s
141 all out when the rain brought an end to pro ceedings. Clitheroe seconds’ match with Rolls-Royce-
was abandoned with the locals on 167-4 but'in the Second Division, Read seconds were ham mered by. Blackburn Northern by six wickets after being bowled out for a paltry 56. ■ There was better news for Read thirds as they
successfully chased 228 for the loss of just three wickets.
Chatbum stroll to 10 -w ick e t v ic to ry
C H A T B U R N seconds enjoyed an emphatic 10-wicket victory over Long Lee to maintain their push to the top of the Craven and Dis trict Cricket League Fourth Division. ■ ' Long Lee were asked to bat first and were dis
missed for 60 with Geoff Lambert (4-11) and Russell Braithwaite (3-19) the notable wicket- takers. After rain interruptions, Chatburn made
quick work of scoring the runs with Simon Tom-, linson leading the way with an aggressive 51 not out.
Clitheroe Advertiser & Times,-July 25th, 2002 33 :
Cup dream is over despite gutsy effort
C L ITH E R O E ’S Ramsbottom Cup dreams died when they suf fered a semi-final exit at the
: hands of Cherry Tree at Preston Old Road on Sunday.
. A gutsy knock of 72 from pro fessional Dexter Fitton was not complemented by the amateurs as the locals were dismissed for 149. ■ Tree comfortably breezed past
Clicheroe’s total for the loss of five wickets with home pro Naeem Ashraf starring with a superlative
. half-century. .. It'proved to be a miserable weekend all-around for Neil
r Bolton’s men as. they, were left frustrated by the weather on Sat
urday after playing themselves into a strong position against Blackburn Northern..
From being 42-6, Clitheroe
hauled themselves back into .the game thanks to a splendid sev enth-wicket partnership of 76 between the skipper and Simon Coulter, as the visitors eventually closed on 187-9 after the allotted 45 overs. ' . They then reduced Northern to 23-2 before heavy showers flooded the outfield, killing any possibili ty of completing the match. However, on Sunday,. Clitheroe won the toss and decided to bat
' :
first on a surprisingly dry pitch at Cherry Tree. ~ However, Pakistani star Ashraf:
was in great form with the ball as • he gave Clitheroe’s openers all sorts of trouble, extracting lift and movement.
\ .:.■■ ■■ Andy Burns was first to go,
gloving a snorter from Ashraf to short leg where Garry Bolton was poised.; ; But Stephen Bishop and Fitton
not extract the same life out of the wicket and struggled to find any rhythm..
....... - - ; 7 ■ The visitors didn’t help them
stood firm in the face of the hos tile spell and put on 55 for the sec-7: ond wicket - both displaying .the guts and determination needed on the testing track.
. Bishop fell to the gentle, seam of
Nigel Robbins when he lofted the ball back over the bowler’s head to Ashraf for. 26 and this proved to be a significant wicket. ’
(. ■ ;
.support he. craved as;wickets fell regulairly.. ” ‘ - ~
'
- Fitton was the seventh wicket to fall for 72 when he was caught in the
outfield.by a great running catch from Mick Veevers off Rob bins.
., The locals' total of 150 was
never going to be enough especial ly with Ashraf in great form with the bat. The visiting seam bowlers could
selves by giving Tree 17 runs through no-balls and wides-and the once safe hands of skipper Bolton dropped two catches,'as; Tree kept on course for a Jennings Ribblesdale League and Cup dou ble. ' A day earlier at Blackburn Northern, Clitheroe looked like •' they were heading for sorry defeat
, 'as they slumped to 42-,6. : However, Neil Bolton and
Simon Coulter tumedithe situa- ■;tion around .with an excellent partnership;'- i'
Nobody else in the Clitheroe - order were able to give Fitton the:

-on 35 as Clitheroetm to ■ post a respectable total of close to . 2 0 0 .
' 1 Clitheroe took to the field in
great spirits and got an early reward when Graham Kershaw trapped Mel Gillibrand for a duck. Mark Hargreaves then cleaned bowled Hooley for 13, but an interesting match was ruined by rain with Northern on 23-2.
Whalley rip up form book
A F T E R last weekend's derby victory at Read, the form book was. turned upside-dow;n again on Saturday as Padiham lost a rain- soaked match with Whalley on run-rate. Professional Lee
Childs took four wickets in response to the visi-
. tors' rampant run-scor ing, including the prized scalp of his . opposite •number Neil Cordingley after the Whalley man looked like posting a huge score. With rain looking
increasingly likely, the hosts elected to field and gave Whalley a tough time of it early on.

Wolves Under 9sside, ( s ) ' y / u . s '. , Martin Davies was
caught out by Jon Hart ley off Childs for 16, and ' the professional struck again to remove Rick Palmer for, six, while Lee Kearsley was run out in the same over for four. Childs claimed his
third victim, that of' Andy Pratt, caught behind by Robinson on 15, to leave the visitors' struggling on 65-4. With Cordingley
already doing wonders at the other end with the bat, Alex Whelan entered the fray and togetehr they put on over a century for the fifth wicket. Cordingley's . 50
arrived off just 77 balls including seven fours and one almighty six, matched soon after by Whelan off 83 balls.
Childs finally claimed
the wicket of Cordingley after he snicked a deliv- . ery behind to wicket keeper Robinson having scored his 83 off just 103 balls. Whelan followed his
pro back to the pavilion iri the next over for 51,
dean-bowled by Jon Campbell after the Padi ham man had just been brought back into the attack. Whalley finished on a
respectable 196-6, and the visitors' got to work straightaway in reply, after Umar Saddique could only guide a David O'Neill delivery to Simon Gorton for seven. Abid Sharif was
bowled with the score on 29 by Whalley captain Jason Smith before Phil Metcalfe and Qasim Ali
finally got the innings started. The pair put on 42 for
the third wicket before both of them fell in the space of six balls. First Smith trapped
Ali lbw for 19, followed in the next over by Met calfe who guided a loose delivery straight to Palmer off O'Neill for 31. With only captain Jon
Hartley (19) entering into double figures, the remainder of the innings faded away as the rain took its toll on the after noon's proceedings. With Padiham having .
been at the crease for just over 25 overs, the consistent bad weather meant that the home side had fallen short of their target on run-rate.
Professional Nawaz tAwV-y.s'- - ■isi
R IB B LESD ALE Wan derers were left frus trated by the weather on Saturday after hold ing the upper hand against derby rivals Read at Church Mead ows. ' The home side had
racked-up an impressive 239 runs for the loss of only three wickets after • being put into bat. The ever-reliable pro
fessional Shahid Nawaz was in sparkling form as he finished unbeaten on 114 - a knock which included nine fours and one six. He was given great
support from Craig Hall (37), who was run out going for a .quick single, and David Howard.. ... The former skipper
drove and pulled the ball to all parts,'-of; the ground, compiling an unbeaten 58 off just 39- balls including three huge sixes However, at the tea
interval, heavy showers began to fall, bringing a
B READ sent a very young side to Pleckgate
Road to play Blackburn Northern, with eight teenagers and a 10 year-old included in the third
team squad. The home side posted a healthy score of 228,
after: Andrew Bennett had taken figures of 5-31 in attack. There was also a wicket for Lancashire Ladies’ Under 14s player Jennifer Laycock. Read's reply started badly with Kyle O'Connor
out for a duck, however Bennett joined namesake Mark at the crease to take the score over-100.;; , After Mark was out for 30, Sam Marshall came
in and the runs continued before Andrew Bennett was finally out for 105.; Captain Izzy, with Marshall, took the score to 229, winning the match with overs to spare.
premature end to pro ceedings as Read were prevented from going out to bat. . On the whole, it was a day to forget for the Read bowlers as only Craig Walton picked up a wicket when he had Martin 'P e e l caught behind by Joey Marshall for three. Another
run-out
accounted for opener John Rain for 12, although he was highly unfortunate as a full- blooded . drive from
Nawaz was deflected onto the non-striker’s stumps. The no-result leaves
Read three points off the pace currently being set by Cherry Tree, tied in second spot with Bamoldswick and Settle. The Wanderers remain in mid-table. Both teams will be
hoping for a more posi tive outcome at the weekend.
■ Read are at home to
Whalley and Ribblesdale play host to Baxenden.
