I HAVE been fortunate in seeing many theatrical productions, but few have equalled the enthusiasm, energy and clever reinterpretation of Shake speare's renowned "Scottish play" per formed by students from all years of Clitheroe Royal,Grammar School: Andrew Midgeley made a thorough-
way, almost as good as Baz Luhrman's wonderful film of Romeo and Juliet set in modem Los Angeles. Songs by Queen, the Beatles and
many more accompanied the dramatic choreography by Mrs Christine Mitchell and involved the large chorus in exciting movements in and around the audience. The witches (Ericai Mileham,
ly-believable Macbeth and his rendi tion of the famous "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" speech brought a lump to my throat. Jessica Pamphlett, as Lady Mac
beth, developed her character moving ly in the second half and all the princi pals are to be commended for their performances.
, The real strength of the production
that gave so much evident enjoyment to the audience was the inspired use of modern music, to enhance the action and themes and the whole concept planned and executed by producer Miss Dawn Elliot brought Shake speare to life in a new and accessible

The' set design by Mrs Sue Hollingsworth and the art department and the costumes by Mrs Helen Jones and Mrs Mary Franks added consider ably to the overall effect. The audience began as if taking part
in a medieval banquet which contin ued in the interval and it made us feel as if we were part of the tragic events. All who contributed to this innovative production are to be congratulated.

Royal date for art lovers ART LOVERS in the North West will be able to take a close-up look at a new portrait of the Queen, the first by a black artist, from tomorrow. The painting by Nigerian-born, Suffolk-based
Chinwe Chukwuogo-Roy, will be on show at the Lowry, Salford Quays, to celebrate the arrival of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. The full-length portrait shows the Queen standing
at a window in Buckingham Palace, but through the window, behind the balcony is a composite view of some of the best-known buildings and landscapes from the Commonwealth. Sydney Opera House, the Taj Mahal, Montego
Bay, a Canadian totem pole and the Petronas Tow ers skyscrapers in Malaysia are all included in the view from the balcony. The portrait was commissioned by the Common
wealth Secretariat and may be seen until August 4th.

ALBUM recordbreaker Elkie Brooks is returning to her roots on Monday. The Salford-born
singer will sing some of her hits, including "Knights in White Satin", "Lilac Wine" and "No More the Fool" when she appears at the Lyric Theatre, Salford Quays on Monday. She was born Elaine
Bookbinder in 1946 and is the most successful female recording artist in the UK, according to the Guinness Book of Hit Singles. She was a precocious
late 60s with the Eric Delaney Band, and became a regular on the jazz and R'n'B circuit. In 1970, she joined
Dada, a 12-piece jazz- rock group with Robert Palmer (vocals) and Pete Gage (guitar). The three went on to form the core of Vinegar Joe, a popular rock/soul act. Elkie went solo and
