SHOULD education officials get their way, twins William and Thomas Woodhead will have to become very early risers. They will have to leave their Hen-
thorn Road, Clitheroe, home' at around 6-45 a.m. in order to avoid a detention by being late at Walton-le- Dale High School, the school Lan cashire County Council has designat ed for the 10-year-olds. When their mother, Mrs Julie
Woodhead, opened the letter from the council offering the places, her first reaction was: "Where the hell is Wal- ton-le-Dale?" The family had previously filled in
forms which asked for Bowland High School and Ribblesdale as first and second choices for when the twins leave St Michael and St John RC Pri mary School in Clitheroe. They were amazed to find that the Walton-le- Dale school had been nominated by Lancashire Education Authority. "This is completely unacceptable,"
she said. "It would mean they would not get home until at least 6 p.m. or 6- 30 p.m. and they would not be able to take part in any after-school activities. "The Walton-le-Dale option is com
pletely unacceptable for safety, health and educational reasons," she added. She complained that her boys would
have to change buses at least twice to complete the 20-mile journey. The Woodheads' three older chil
dren all went to St Augustine's RC High School at Billington, but the
family, for reasons they are only will ing to'disclose at the appeal into the allocation of Walton-le-Dale, do not want the twins to follow the three older ones in the family. The appeal papers have already been returned to Lancashire County
Council. ■' "The boys certainly won't be going
to school at, Walton-le-Dale," added Mrs Woodhead. A spokesman for Lancashire Coun
ty Council said the situation had been complicated by the fact that the boys are at a Roman Catholic primary school, but the family did not want them to go on to the Roman Catholic high school. The decision automatically put
them lower down the list for the other schools in the Ribble Valley. The family's situation bears out con
cerns by other parents about the avail ability of places in Ribble Valley schools. A group of parents calling them
selves Ribble Valley Schools for Ribble Valley Children have asked education officials to meet them to discuss an offer from Clitheroe Royal Grammar School of 30 additional places for local children.
