SYRAH one of the most noble of black grape vari

eties and in its manifesta tion of "Hermitage" it was a t on time the most sought-after red wine of France. The origins of syrah or

it came from the town of Syracuse in Sicily. While scanning the shelves at Oddbins, I noted a couple of interesting wines from this grape. One I had seen in Por

shiraz, as it is called in Australia, date back many centuries. I t is thought to have been brought to the Rhone val ley by the returning Cru saders, from the ancient town of Shiraz in what was Persia, now present day Iran. Another theory is that

tugal, called Incognito, as the grape was not official ly permitted to be grown, but some experimental plots were vinified and the winemaker had to keep it a secret as to the grape varieties used until it could be proved to the autho r ities th a t syrah was capable of producing quality wines. So "Incog nito" was bom and is now available at £14.99. My f ind of the day

comes from James Her rick an Englishman who learned his craft in Cham

pagne, Australia and Cal ifornia, and is showing just how good this grape can be. His MILLIA PAS- SUM 1998, is £6.99 and comes from Narbonne in the heart of the Langue doc region. Its name is taken from the Roman "a thousand paces", being the distance between the milestones found on the Roman roads, and the label bears words found on one such milestone. The wine is dark,

packed with spicy, smoky flavours of bramble jam, the home-made variety, leading to a very long per sis tent finish which is smooth and velvety.

Ghost (Sky Cinema, 10.15pm) A classic chick flick weepy. Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore star. The tale begins when stockbroker Sam Wheat (Swayze) is mur dered, but his spirit remains on Earth to pro tect girlfriend Molly (Moore) from the perpetra tor. As a ghost, he enlists the help of spiritual ist Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg) to com municate with Molly and bring his killers to

Justice. While the special effects show their age, the story and sentiment remains almost unrivalled by its modern contemporaries.
