IT was a "good game - good game" of golf when Simonstone's James Hindle teed off with entertainer Burce Forsythe (pictured togeth er, right) in a chanty tournament. Mr Hindle, of Woodside Road,
who is captain of Mytton Fold Golf Club, mixed with the rich and famous a t Wentworth Golf Club, in Surrey, as he took part in the annual Captain's Cup: The captains of golf clubs

councillors. Mr David Schofield wants to
I use a bam a t Baygate, Bolton- | by-Bowland, as a day-visitors- only outdoor pursuits centre, with living accommodation for himself as manager on the first floor. Mr Schofield told the bor-. ough council's Plan n in g and Development Committee he was experienced in this field and employed two part-time staff. The barn is close to the existing farm a t Baygate and a track

would have to be laid to make a new access. Several members of the com
mittee welcomed the idea of an outdoor centre. A report to the committee said the barn's space would be split 60% employment use and '40% residential. This split is seen by officials as accept able for a predominantly business conversion with ancillary residen-
' tial use in the countryside. But Coun. Phillip Nierop Sug gested the floor area figures did
not give such a split and suggest ed they be investigated further.
-. He felt the residential area would be greater than indicated and the centre more obvious than people
. thought. The centre would be used for
team-building and outdoor activi ties such as archery and orienteer
ing. School and other groups would use the centre, arriving in a minibus and with a maximum of 12 people in a day, being on the site from'9-30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The business part of the barn
would include two toilet blocks and a lecture room for classroom work. A third set of toilets and a shower room would be created in what is now an equipment room. Objectors have expressed fears
of quad bikes screaming about the complex, but offficials say there would
be.no motorised activities and those th a t took place would be 100m from resi dents. I t is felt the scheme of adapta
tion would not detract from the character of the barn. The parish council has objected to the plan, saying there is insuffi
cient detail in it and the access is from a narrow road on which increased traffic would represent a hazard. But there are no objections
from county highway, officials. The Ribble Valley officials'
report said the barn's.location near the farm complex would mean its new use would not be too obvious and the new track would be well screened by existing wood land. There would be a limited detrimental visual impact on the area of outstanding natural beau
ty. The committee deferred the
application for officials to approve it, provided the query about the residence-employment space pro portion was satisfactorily resolved and an undertaking given that no motorised activities take place.
