CRGS ‘old girls’ take trip down Memory Lane

TH EY returned from London and Nottingham to be reunited with their fellow old girls from Clitheroe Royal .Grammar School. V.

attracting almost 50 members. They were welcomed to the infor mal gathering.by president Mrs Judith Blackburn.

. - The former female, pupils' asso

ciation held its annual get-togeth er at the Calf's Head, Worston,

' Among those who attended were Miss Ann Farmer,'deputy,' head of CRGS's sixth form, who spoke and highlighted some of the

significant events which had taken place during the last academic year at the school. She particular ly mentioned the eight progress prizes presented to, pupils by the Old Girls' Association, saying they were popular among the staff.' Head boy Graeme Finnie, who

attended'with head girl Rachel Edwards, proposed a vote of thanks, and committee member Mrs Christine Woodworth organ ised some quizzes. Members of the committee are

Naturalists’ walk around the Worthington lakes

THE final walk of Clitheroe Nat uralist Society's summer pro gramme was around the Wor thington lakes area.

‘ Eighteen members and friends

enjoyed a lovely autumn day stroll first by the three reservoirs, where lots of Canada geese were sighted along with mallards, tufted ducks, coots, moorhens and two great crested grebe. At the last reservoir, a heron was seen. Along the way, with the weath er being so mild, lots of flowers

were still in bloom. Forty-eight varieties were notecj - among them were purple loosestrife, alpine rag wort, bumet saxifrage and peren nial sow thistle. Along with the flowers enjoying the sun, a peacock butterfly gave the group chance to take some photographs. The reservoirs wereleft behind and the party made its'way across

open fields to the banks of the River Douglas, where lunch was taken. On the way, about 120 house martins were seen getting

together for their migration flight. The group eft the river to join

the canal towpath on into AdUng- ton and a change of path -

party towards the start. Before arriving back'at the

reservoirs, a short stop was taken outside Wigan Golf Club club house - once Worthington Abbey. The date stone over the front read 1362. A moat surrounds the build ing and provides residence for two black swans.

the dis used railway track - returned the Leaving the clubhouse, the path

led back through the trees to the reservoir, where again Canada geese were seen, along with two cormorants, a little grebe and pairs of pied and grey wagtails. The next event is not as was

published last week; it is the AGM. This will take place .tonight at the library from 7-30 p.m. The first lecture of the winter

season is on October 24th at 7-30 p.m., when Pauline Mellor will speak on "The Western Isles".

| i Concern on plans for ;

arts centre complex I AM writing in reference to the proposed cin- .

ema/art centre complex on the old gas works. site, at the rear of Kirkmoor Road, Clitheroe. . Already, after just a few days, many local res

idents are very unhappy about the extra traffic, noise, etc., if. the plan is given the go-ahead. Castle View is, at present, used for parking,

by many people who work in the town centre during the day, and the last thing we want are

dozens more cars using it at nightl There are many small children who live and

play in the Castle View/Kirkmoor Road area, especially after school. Also at night, Castle View and every surrounding street has cars parked on both sides of the road. So, if the scheme is to be. passed, a large free car park

must be incorporated in it. Regarding the extra noise problem, exactly

opposite the proposed site is a retirement home and, along the full-length of one side of Castle View, there are senior citizens! bungalows. Therefore, before Ribble Valley Borough

Council tries to push the scheme through, it must call a public meeting to get local feelings!

“CONCERNED LOCAL RESIDENT” Thanks for the prompt

action over travellers I WOULD like to express my thanks to Rib ble Valley Borough Council officials for their immediate response in dealing with the trav ellers in Barrow, to our borough councillor Robert Thompson for his assistance and to the police for the extra patrols in the area. Thanks also to the people responsible for cleaning the site when the travellers left -

the

area was in a disgusting state, a health hazard and a threat to the local wildlife. This is the second .time in recent years that

travellers have stayed in Barrow,, and I hope precautions have been taken by the landowner to prevent it happening again.

A GRATEFUL VILLAGE RESIDENT

I hazard to car users THE creation of cycle lanes throughout towns and cities will no doubt bring tears of joy to the

users. Safer to an extent:for them, I grant you, but at the same time'making stretches of road narrower and more hazardous for the car user. I t is hardly like the flat lands of Holland where thousands of cyclists can be seen using

; the roads. Just take note of the ratio of the two different forms of transport next tune you walk'or drive along. What puzzles me is when this boom of safe cycle lanes end - what then? Do they take to the pavement or go back to

taking their chance inthe busy traffic? There are oidy certain stretches of road throughout' towns that could cater for the cyclist, others would be totally impractical and dangerous to

all users. OBSERVER”
