will be used to identify the age of a vehicle. From September, a new system will be

used, with a mixture of letters and numbers- used to show where and when a car was first registered. Back in 1963, when the first A-reg plate

was introduced, the motoring scene was very different from the present day. In those days models such as the Mini,

Morris Minor, Vauxhall Viva, Ford Anglia and Hillman Imp dominated the roads. There was not a Japanese car in sight, the first import not arriving in Britain until two

years later. ■ The standard of our cars has, of course, also changed and much for the better. Nowa days, even basic models have extra features which were not even optional extras — or in some cases had not even been thought of — back in the early 60s. But one thing that has been constant over most of this period has been the new year

registration plate and the dramatic surge in car sales it created around August 1st.

r* .. :«V For some years the British motor industry

was keen to change the system, but police and others were not keen to lose the recogni tion value that the year letter had. So the search was set in motion to find a

system that everyone was happy with. Last year, of course, the switch was made

to twice-yearly letter changes, but from Sep tember the format will be altered completely. The new system will use two letters fol

and Vehicle Licensing Agency office that the vehicle was registered at. The letter P will be used for the Preston and Carlisle offices, with Preston using A through to T as the second letter. For example, a plate beginning PB will indicate that the car was registered at Pre- ston. The two numbers following will indicate

lowed by two numbers to show the area and date of initial registration respectively (the - new age identifier will continue to change twice a year, in March and September). These four characters will be followed by a.

space and then three random letters. ' This retains the seven-character profile

with the regional and age identifiers designed

to act as memory tags. The first two letters on the new registra

tion plate will identify the area and Driver

the period the vehicle was first registered. The first number to be used, from September this year, will be 51, to indicate that this was a registration in the second period of 2001. In March next year, the number will

switch to 02, the following September to 52 and so on. The last three digits on the plate will be

random letters. The new format is designed to take us

through to the year 2050, when the format can be continued, repeated or, of course, changed again completely.

, You Won't Pay Through The No'seTo Get Into This .Club And. There’s No NeedTo Dress To Impress. Andy Enright Checks Out The 'Come As You Are' Corsa Club.

There's something about a basic supermini that's enormously appealing. The Vauxhall Corsa Club is a case in point. With a pair of no-nonsense^ engines, two body styles to choose from and an indestructible air, the Corsa Club is an urban scoot that looks cute but which, you can park anywhere, safe in the knowledge that it'll still be in one piece when you get back.

That's not to say that the Club, which sits just above the entry-level Expression model in the Corsa hierarchy, is in any way undesirable. The latest shape Corsa may not be not as cute in appearance as it's predecessor but it's grown up in all the areas that were becoming irritating in the old model. And it adds a few new virtues of its own. Just don't expect it to turn any heads, as the latest Corsa's shape is becoming a familiar fixture on British roads.

Becoming a Club owner starts at a mere £7,995, which will land you a 1.0 16v three-door. If you need more doors or more power, you'll need

to upgrade to the 1.2-litre I6v engined car, the three-door version of' which retails at £8,460 whilst the five-door will set you back a hardly exorbitant £8,960.

"The latest Corsa's shape is becoming a familiar fixture on British roads..."

As you would expect from a supermini model that sits near the bargain end of the range, you probably, won't be, expecting satellite navigation and cruise control and you won't be disappointed. The Corsa Club's . equipment levels are pretty modest, but then you do tend to get what you pay for. If you were after a well-equipped rival for the same money,’ Korean rivals offer more buttons to press and toys to play with, but they don't benefit from the development in a thoroughly modern vehicle platform that's evident as soon as you turn a wheel in the Corsa.

You wouldn't expect outright performance to be a strong point of either Club model - and sure enough, the Club 1.0 takes 16.0s to reach 60mph and can't break the I OOmph barrier. If that's an issue, then the 1.2-litre I6v four-cylinder model that manages sixty in 12.0s on the way to 106mph could be a better bet. If performance isn’t exceptional, the same can hardly be said of the fuel consumption figures. Expect to average 50mpg in the 1,0-litre car, or 45mpg in the 1.2-litre guise and you shouldn't be too far from the mark. Even at our super-inflated fuel • prices, that's an average year's motoring for less than £ 1,000. Ever ■ wondered why the Chancellor always looks as if his mother-in-law's just moved in? He's probably just seen the soaring Corsa sales chart...

Neither banging hardcore nor easy listening, the music in this Club won't attract too many customers, but you'll never be left out of pocket...

Vantage Toyota goes from strength to strength.

The friendly staff at Colne

Vantage Toyota are the official Toyota retailers for the whole of the East Lancashire area and in their first five weeks of trading at their new Colne showroom the sheer volume of people coming through the doors has been a good indicator of just how much the public value the service. Sales levels have already significantly exceeded expectations and with the new registration system ^ being introduced on September 1st, the busiest period is almost certainly still to come.

its

Vantage have recently been awarded the Toyota franchise for Blackburn in addition to their new facility at Colne. In the fullness of time a new dealership will be built on a green-field site in the town but for the time being, Toyota customers are invited to take advantage of the temporary facilities at Junction 7 Business Park off the M65. Here Vantage Toyota can supply aftersales service of the high standard that their customers have come to expect over the years.

At the new Colne site, visitors have been delighted to discover one of the most relaxing atmospheres to be found at any dealership - all thanks to the new Toyota Experience Program which aims to give customers a higher degree of customer care than ever before. It all starts when you enter the dealership, where a host will welcome you to the facility.

The open plan lay-out is designed to make you.feel at home and the cafE-style area will let you relax in pleasant surroundings while your children (or partner) makes use of the Internet stations. The aim is to make your visit for sales or aftersales service as rewarding as possible - an experience rather than a chore. The environment of the dealership has been painstakingly crafted to make everyone feel comfortable, and to remove the contents of the showroom from the traditional 'Look But Don't Touch' atmosphere of other dealerships

As you may already be aware, a new registration system is to be introduced on September 1st. Orders for new registration plate cars are already flooding into the dealership at an unprecedented rate and we're still well over a month away from the big day. Demand is significantly higher than it was before any of the previous new registration launches, so Vantage Toyota are advising the public to waste no time in ordering their new vehicles for delivery in

early September. Ordering your new car couldn't be simpler but choosing which of the outstanding Toyota models is best for you could present more of a problem. Toyota vehicles and superb build quality go hand in hand. The cars in the range are amongst the most reliable that you can buy but the marque has proved that bombproof mechanicals and strong value for money don t have to come at the expense of design flair and innovation.

To find out more about any of the models in the New Toyota range, just contact Vantage Toyota on (01282) 857760 or visit the showroom at North Valley Road retail park in Colne.

tance and success of franchised deal er networks to car manufacturers," said Alan Pulham, franchised deeal- er director of the Retail Motor Industry Federation. "There is every likelihood that this

year could prove a record year for new car sales - exceeding the 2.3 mil lion sales seen in 1989," he added.
