their stay was a visit to Blackpool where Lan cashire-based Russian ice dance stars Alexei Kislit- syn and Natalia Pestova performed. The couple, who are well

known where they how live in Rawtenstall for helping children through their own charity, "Rossendale Chil dren's Day," arranged for the group of seven to 12- year- olds to enjoy rides on the Pleasure Beach, before seeing the Russian pair perform in the spectacular Hot Ice Show. The duo organised a simi

"There is no knowing what the future holds for these children. Many have problems with their auto-immune systems and the incidence of chil dren's cancers in the region is up by 800%. Village community will miss man who was deeply involved in its life

COMMUNITY life in th e Bolton-by-Bowland area will feel th e loss of Mr R o b e r t

James Howard. Retired farmer Mr Howard,

who died on Thursday at the age of 90, was deeply involved in vil lage affairs - he was a parish councillor and a member of the former Bowland Rural District

Council. He had lived in Main Street, Bolton-by-Bowland, for the last

10 years. He was bom in 1911, one of five

children, on Lowlands Farm,

Newton. For some years in the 1930s he

. bus to negotiate steep hills. In 1940, he married and took

drove for Bounty's Buses and taxis on routes into Clitheroe. He would often relate stories of hav ing to unload his passengers on busy Bank Holidays to enable the

the tenancy of Atkinson’s in Bolton-by-Bowland, which he

farmed for two years. Then he took on Burn House

Farm, Slaidbum, during the war, farming 250, acres of low fell with

several hundred acres of fell

rights. ■ The family was given the help of a group of Italian prisoners of war to help grow oats and turnips. Mr Howard and one particular prisoner, Mr Renato Furbatto, had a major part to play in assist ing at the aftermath of a tragedy in 1945, when an American Liber ator bomber crashed at Bum Fell, above Slaidbum, killing a number of airmen. They assisted the injured and the farmhouse was used as a centre’for the rescue operation.

Mr Howard (pictured) and his

late wife were able to be reunited with the Italian during a holiday in Italy in 1990. Mr Howard was a member of

Bowland RDC from 1967 to 1974. He was also a former president

of Bolton-by-Bowland Young Farmers' Club and a founder member of the village hall com mittee. He was also on the war memor

ial committee. In his earlier days, he was a

keen competitor at clay pigeon shoots and, although he did not

compete, he was a devotee of sheep dog trials. He leaves a son, Mr David

Howard, and two grandchildren. The funeral is at Skipton Cre

matorium tomorrow, followed by a memorial service at Holden Chapel at 12-30 p.m.
