Second string hit back in style

Nelson Reserves 1 Clitheroe Reserves 2 CLITHEROE Reserves returned to winning ways with a fine victory over Nelson. The Blues had the

better of the early exchanges but went a

goal behind after 15

minutes. However, it didn’t take

them long to get back on levels terms when Tony Harwood lashed home an unstoppable drive from 25 yards. The winning goal

arrived 10 minutes before the break when a great move between Danny Stanley, Matt Gamer and John-Paul Fagan ended in James McMahon supplying

the finishing touch. Fagan then saw his

snap-shot saved, while McMahon crashed a shot against the woodwork before the Blues defended well in the second half to secure a fine win. The Reserves face

Padiham on Saturday at Shawbridge (ko 3 p.m.).

By CRAIG SALMON

CLITHEROE manager Lee Sculpher looks set to further strengthen his squad as his team heads towards the busy

festive period. The Blues boss has opened talks

with Darwen hot-shot Matt Swailes with a view to a move to Shaw-

bridge. And Sculpher is also hoping to fill .

the void left by former skipper Barrie Hart by signing Fulwood Amateurs full back Gil Brooks. Sculpher confirmed: “I am hop ing to speak to these two players

this week.” On the injury front, Clitheroe

look set to receive a massive boost this weekend with the news tha t last-season’s joint-leading goalscor- er Lee Cryer may play some part in the Blues’ away fixture a t

Congleton on Saturday. The quick-silver striker has been

out of action for eight weeks with

knee ligament trouble. However, Sculpher said: I am

hoping Lee will play some part on Saturday.

“If not, he will definitely play for . , , ,

the reserves and will be involved with the firs t team a week on

Saturday. “I t will be like signing a new

player when he returns.” The Blues did receive a blow early

this week with the news that Black pool Mechanics forward Ian Vickers has changed his mind and will now

not be signing for the Blues. Sculpher said: “He’s had a change

of heart I t’s his prerogative. We are disappointed because he would have been a great asset to us.” Meanwhile, Sculpher was delight ed with his side’s magnificent 2-0

Spencer double seals cup triumph i Aa.m -mne which troubled vet-

zone which troubled vet eran keeper Ian Senior. And the Blues finally

gave themselves some breathing space in the 58th minute when Spencer ran clear and blasted past Senior. The home side contin

Clilheroe 1 Newcastle Town 1 A PENALTY four minutes from time dealt Clitheroe’s North West C o u n t ies ’ F i r s t Division promotion hopes a serious blow on

A Chris Whittingham goal looked

to have the Blues well on course for a 1-0 win over Newcastle Town until disaster struck in the 86th minute. A lucky ricochet fell kindly into

the path of Town’s Andy Bott. He took the ball around Kris Richens b u t was brought down by the

Clitheroe number one. The referee pointed to the spot

and Bott picked himself up and con verted the spot-kick. The Blues only have themselves

to blame for not collecting all three points, however, as they enjoyed lots of possession but failed to find the

killer second goal. Clitheroe nearly took the lead on

17 minutes when Jason Jones left his marker in a daze before crossing for Whittingham, who headed inches

wide. But the Blues finally went ahead , ,

on the stroke of half-time when Richard Fogarty played a telling throughball for Whittingham to run on to. The pacey forward held off his marker before slotting the ball around the Town keeper. The scoreline should have read 2-

0 four minutes into the second half but Jones’ header from Lee Sculpher’s centre went the wrong

side of the crossbar. Fogarty and Whittingham went

close on a number of occasions to doubling the home side’s lead while Richens had to be alert to thwart Dave Woodvine in the 68th minute. Town’s Mark Beeston shot over

from inside the box on 81 minutes but ju s t when i t looked like Clitheroe had secured all three points, they were pegged back by

Bott’s penalty.
