THE HEAD OF LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

_______ by Andy Enright_____________

of this national institution. Rivals such as the Toyota MR2 and Vauxhall

J ro I t** 1 ' l T VX220 may have had a short spell in the ume-

light, b u t now the Elise aims to redress the bal ance and assume its customary place on the top

of the podium Anybody visiting the

Lotus factory a t Hethel, Norfolk, is used to see ing various odd cars in some form of disguise being hammered around the bumpy test track, but the Elise managed a

rare feat. Until i t was unveiled

a t the 2000 Birmingham Motor Show, i t had been a closely-guarded secret. In a world of long

lenses, leaked computer drawings and a savvy public tooled up with cameras, Lotus had managed to scoop the

Press. What was more, the

new Elise was not just a mild facelift of the old car. Every body panel is new, and with a curvy look reminiscent of the M250 show car, i t is surely the way that Lotus “family” styling

will develop. One of the key

changes is in making the Elise easier to get into.

The old car required

the suppleness of a fillet ed limbo dancer to effect an entry with the hood

on. The solution to this

problem is novel. The aluminium “tub” that constitutes the car’s

chassis has been revised to make the sills narrow

er, adding a crucial 40mm to the door aper

tures. The much-criticised

soft-top roof has come in for some attention too and is now far easier to use, being a modified version of the roof found on the Lotus-built Vaux

hall VX220. There is also an

option of a T-bar hard top roof, which allows two panels to be removed and stored in the boot, leaving just a central strut. The interior has had a

light makeover too, blue backlighting for the instrument panel evi-

- edges, but it seems MG does not stick to estab-

- lished scripts like this. The latest MGF

Freestyle special edition is a car that has surfed

the Zeitgeist. -The Freestyle is based

upon the most popular

1.8-litre version of the MGF and is available in three distinct guises- the 1.8i Freestyle, the

! CVT-equipped 1.8i Stepspeed Freestyle and the range-topping 1.8i

.WC Freestyle. Prices s ta rt a t

£18,295 for the base

model. An extra £200 will land you the Step- speed version, while you

. £19,995 squirreled away to stretch to the WC

will need to have variant.Although it is easy to

be cynical about special edition models, it is

, important to quantify / exactly what you get for

I your money. You will i pay an additional £1,315 over the price of a standard 1.8i and £500 on top of a Step- speed or a W C , but the figures do not tell the

whole story. Given th a t some of

the items included in

• the price of a Freestyle 1' are of similar quality to 1 • tha t found on the Step- speed and WC cars,

’ perhaps the price differ

ential between the 1.8i Freestyle and the others

' i s bumps the price of the •

justified. Nevertheless, it

car uncomfortably above top-specification Mazda MX5 or Toyota

1MR2 and approaching 1 the price of a 2.2-litre

by Andy Enright Vauxhall Astra convert-

ible. As one of my teachers

would frequently mut ter a t an impending lame excuse: “This had

better be good . . . ” Fortunately, it is. A

full leather interior is included in the deal and this would account for £850 from the options

list. The 16in. multi spoke alloy wheels would

take care of another £600, so whichever way you look a t it you are

ahead already. Factor in a CD tuner,

Freestyle badging and chrome exhaust finish

ers and the deal looks reasonably sweet, but what will clinch it for some is the front and rear spoilers tha t come straight from the MGF Trophy cabinet. Five colours are

offered - Solar Red, Tahiti Blue, Platinum Silver, British Racing Green and Anthracite. It seems nobody a t MG Rover could come up with an alluring associa tion for anthracite, so they just gave up.

. What is perhaps fasci

nating about the Freestyle in particular,

and the MGF in gener al, is tha t we like to por tray the roadster mar ket as one patronised by fickle aesthetes who will constantly be looking for the next bandwagon

to jump upon. Sales of the MGF run

counter to this some what enduring image. I t may not be the freshest face on the block, but buyers know a good

thing when they see it, and the MGF Freestyle

does just enough to recycle the value propo

sition. Other roadsters may

gamer more column inches, but none can make pen meet dotted

line quite like the MGF. Although i t probably

makes sounder financial

sense when bought in Stepspeed or W C ver sions, the Freestyle’s sums seem to add up nicely.

dently being this year’s must-have interior fea

ture. The use of combina

tion analogue and digi tal read-outs persists as before, but the effect is far classier, with a leather-clad steering wheel now fitted as stan

dard. There has even been a

nod towards practicali ty, with a full-length

. shelf, extra storage space behind the seats, and a more generous boot.

As with any develop

ments to the Elise, how ever, the focus is on ulti mate driving pleasure. The car continues to

use a version of the Rover K-series engine, although in this instance it is tuned to 120 b.h.p., up a couple of horsepow

er on the old unit. The close ratio five-

speed gearbox tha t was such a hit with Elise 111S owners has found its way into the latest car, along with a

remapped engine control unit to give more aggres sive throttle response. This shorter gearing

affects the car’s perfor mance, which means that top speed is down 1 m.p.h. to 125 m.p.h., although the Elise’s sprinting ability has been transformed. I t is now possible to

hit 60 m.p.h. in only 5.7 seconds, and 100 m.p.h. is attainable in just 17.2 seconds, 0.2 and 0.8 sec onds quicker respective

ly than the best figures the old car could gener ate, despite a weight penalty of 22kg. The first Lotus to be

designed totally on a computer, the latest

Elise looks to have moved th,e lightweight roadster goalposts on again, much as the old car did upon its intro duction way back in

1996. How the opposition

respond will be interest ing indeed

UST when we thought that the Elise was beginning to look a touch quaint, Lotus has unleashed an all-new version

[A not ■ so Mini success

LAMBER around the lulest MINI and you will find

the clues. Like a bottle blonde s

eyebrows or the ticking second hand of a fake Rolex watch, the small details betray the MINI’S true provenance. While the MINI’S

faux-Englishncss may grate with those who find it difficult to love owners BMW, it is at least built in Britain-and built well,

too. The MINI One is pow

ered by a 90 b.h.p. 1.6- litre 16-valve engine. While it is retro in design, it is defiantly brought bang up to date in the powertrain department. With a rest to 60 m.p.h. time of 10.9 seconds, the

j MINI One punches big holes in the performance envelope of classic Coop er models and proves that there is no substitute for cubic capacity. This is

borne out by a torque fig ure of lOllb/fl, which is generated quite low down, giving the 1.6-Iitrc

engine a gutsy feci. We will not be getting

the 163 b.h.p. super charged Mini Cooper S for a while yet, but early reports hint at a 135 m.p.h. top speed and a sprint to 60 m.p.h. in just

seven seconds. Distinguished from

lesser models by a bonnet air scoop, new bumpers, chunky alloys and a twin exhaust, expect the Coop er S to generate lengthy waiting lists, especially at a projected price of just

£15,000. Despite its unasham

edly retro appeal, the MINI has some reassur

ingly modern founda

tions. Clamber underneath

A t 1 V , *1* © 1 , = - - Ml

and you will spot BMW’s Z-axle multi-link rear

suspension. There is a wrap-around

glasshouse with glazed in side pillars featuring fully flush panes. This creates a “floating-roof”cffecl, which can be emphasised by the Cooper’s options of having the roof painted in black or white. Like the original, the

interior of the MINI is still somewhat cramped, and retro themes abound, from the chrome detailing to the cavernous door

bins. The centrally-mount

ed speedometer, winged MINI budging anti hon eycomb mesh grille on the Cooper all act as visual throwbacks to the

’50s. Other changes have a

distinctly modern touch.

The laughable boot of the original Mini has been replaced by a more practi cal hatchback arrange

ment. Some rather cheap sil

ver-painted plastics are used in Ihc interior, as the original aluminium fit tings were ditched on the

grounds of cost. Other proposed touch

es. such as the ’60s-stylc starter button and stalk- mounted hazard lights, also got the chop due to pricing concerns. The MINI comes

laden with a great deal of historical baggage, some stubborn prejudices to overcome and a cynical British public to con

vince. To succeed against

these impediments, it needed to be very good. It is. Another MINI adven ture concludes.
