new lighting scheme will be installed a t the church. And, as well as being com

pletely rewired and redeco rated, much of the intricate woodwork will be cleaned

by specialists. Keeping the chinch open

while the work was in progress would not only have-taken longer, but--

would also have cost more. As a result, the whole build ing closed on January 1st and is not due to reopen until Easter Sunday. Although tens of thou

sands have been raised towards the cost of the refurbishment scheme, there is still a shortfall of £8,000. However Mr Sterry said he was confident that the money would be raised. Pictured helping to clear

the group’s music scene went quiet until Rob, then living in York, saw a poster advertising a battle of the bands. He contacted the other members of the group and, after a day's rehearsal, they decided to enter and went on to win the competi

tion. Since its initial success

the band has gone on to relocate in Manchester and has played a t gigs at Clitheroe's Dog and Sports Bar, as well as at venues in Lancaster and Manchester. After appearing first on the bill a t Roadhouse, the band, whose exciting sound can be likened to REM, James and New Order, was

A spectacular end to fire-fighter’s career

by Peter Dewhurst

KEITH TAYLOR’S last shift as a fire-fight er proved to be more spectacular than he

could have imagined. For the Glitheroe man

ended up a t one of the biggest fires he had seen in his 26-year career just hours before he hung up his hel met for the last time. Fire-fighter Taylor’s last

day was Thursday and there were surprise plans for colleagues past and present to gather a t Nelson,Fire Station to say farewell to

him. But, shortly after noon,

Keith and the rest of his Green Watch colleagues at Nelson were called to a massive fire at Pine Direct

in Burnley. Keith said: “We were

around the fourth pump to arrive at the scene. I was there for more than an hour, but then they told me to return to Nelson for the farewell. I didn't know any- thlng about it until then. Bom in Great Harwood,

Mr Taylor worked as a rail way clerk, a betting shop manager and at Mullards before joining the fire ser vice in 1974. He spent his firs t 13

•years’ service at Burnley Fire Station, then moved to Nelson;-where he has spent

the final 13 years. He never sought promotion, and said: “I have always enjoyed

being a fireman.” Former colleagues, inclu

ding Tom. Hardman, Peter Isherwood, Bob Jowett and Paul Barwick returned to wish him well and they were joined by Lancashire Chief Fire Officer Mr Peter Hol

land. At Nelson, Mr Taylor

served on Green Watch, which was close to becom ing Grey Watch in recent years, with four of the seven on the watch being past 50. That average will drop with the retirement of Mr Tay lor, following that of Paul Barwick. He said: “I will miss the

job. I have been on some big fires over the years, but the one on my last day was cer- | tainly one of the bigger

ones.”
