PUPILS at Sabden Primary and St Mail's RC Schools took to the art of bowling like ducks to water.

As a special end of term treat, Sabaen Bowling Club invited the youngsters along to try their skills at the game, which is very popular in Sabden. Club president Mrs Anita Whalley, who

SCOUTS and Guides from Whalley and the Ribble Valley were among the 300 young people from East Lan cashire who had a fun- filled activity weekend at their county rally at Bowley Scout Camp

site, Great Harwood. The rally was held on

bowlers even though some had never been on the green before and they thought it was brilliant," she said. Bowlers Alan Dewhurst, Les White and

Alan and Anita Whalley were on hand to provide the coaching and refreshments afterwards for the children. Our picture shows the youngsters enjoy

what was to have been the first weekend of a major international jamboree th a t, earlier in the year, had to be postponed until 2003, due to uncertainty surrounding the foot and

mouth outbreak. The international dimen

sion was still evident, with 20 Scouts arriving from Romania at the start of two

weeks of camping and enjoying home hospitality with local families. On the Saturday, Ribble

Valley Borough Council Mayor and her consort and Clitheroe Town Council deputy Mayor and May oress joined other invited guests for a buffet lunch, followed by a tour of the site and an opportunity to meet Scouts and Guides. They watched as bridges were built, cold water was instantly converted to hot and experienced "smokey" shortbread baked on an

open fire. Before they left for home,

they were presented with a gift from the Romanian

Scouts. The day was memorable

for the young people whp met the Chief Scout, Mr George Purdy, in the infor

mal environment of the campsite when he discussed matters of great impor tance to the Scouts and Guides, including the rela tive merits of chewy frogs and orange Kit Katsl Guides from the four cor

ners of the Guiding globe have been staying at Bow ley during the Internation al Girl Guides' Convention. Due to foot and mouth restrictions in the Ribble Valley, the convention was unable to take place at Waddow Hall, Wadding- ton, and the venue was rearranged. Many of the young visi

tors have been seen throughout the Ribble Val ley during the past week and, last Friday, descended on the campsite for the clos ing ceremony, a fantastic * firework display.
