ing ruefully at the Rover 45 and thinking that if they were set ting out to design a cutting edge sports saloon they would not
start from here. After driving what
most considered would be the runt of the litter, it seems the MG chassis engineers either had bet ter raw material than any of us gave them credit for or are a cabal of alchemists. The MG ZS models are a cracking bunch of driver’s cars. Aside from the obvious

spoiler kit and alloy wheels, most of the changes that transform the ZS have been wrought out of sight. The car has been lowered
by 20mm and fitted with stiffer springs and meatier dampers. Suspension bush es are now made of rigid polyurethane instead of rubber to give more road feel and sharper reaction to the driver, who can now react to said changes more effectively thanks to a quicker and more accurate
steering system. Bigger brakes mean that

you can overtake other traffic without recourse to speeding. If you need to work that one out in your head, you may constitute the ZS target market. Two engines are avail able, a 120 b.h.p. 1.8-litre,

flight, Hyundai has a tough task on its hands with the Matrix. ’ It is a distinctive effort,
the Pininfarina-designed Matrix. That rather odd window line is a novelty and divided opinion among those who sampled it. It certainly makes an

No sleek chrome roof rails here, instead it is a proper rack, the sort of thing sported by Marinas in the ’70s, only in this instance sturdy enough to prop up the Russian economy.

perfectly weighted for flinging the car down a twisty back road, and the suspension is firm without becoming unduly crashy or harsh. More than anything else,
MG Rover needs to get prospective customers behind the wheel of the ZS in order to sell its seductive benefits.

what anonymous, looking all-too similar to a Premacy, a Space Star or any other Far Eastern mini-MPV that drifts aimlessly to mind. The rear is far sharper,
with some neatly-bevelled planes that catch the light in interesting ways.

ues the slightly left-field styling theme with central ly-mounted instruments which, although angled towards the driver, require some effort to read quickly and the overall feel is of a number of good ideas stunt ed due to cost considera tions. Nevertheless, the Matrix
features a befuddling array of storage boxes, shelves and pockets to the extent that finding a casually secreted key or card can be the work of several min utes.

budget offerings out there, the Matrix is probably top of
the pile. As the next logical step up from the burgeoning array
of van-based MPVs out there, the Matrix makes a lot of sense.
