Run spree for cup finalists Read

R

EAD warmed up for this weekend’s Jennings Ramsbottom Cup final with a run-rate victory over Whalley.

Some substantial scoring from Read’s middle

order allowed the Whalley Roaders to post 221- 4.

In reply. Whalley were 105-3 off 31 overs when the weather intervened and signalled vic

tory for Nick Marsh’s men. Marsh had earlier won the toss and decided to

have first use of a good batting track. The skipper, however, did not bust long as he

was dismissed for seven by Kiwi Jason Smith with David Pearson having the safe pair of

hands. 'Phis brought professional Peter Sleep to the

crease and together with Michael Whalley. the pair gave the Station Roaders the runaround. The opener cracked 10 fours on his way to a

super 72 before he was undone by Hugh Doyle thanks to a smart catch from Garetli Edmond-

.son. Burlier, former Australian Test player Sleep

(43) had also been dismissed by the same bowler

with Pearson again taking the catch. With these two batsmen out the onus fell on

Terry Little and Duncan Bennett. However the youngster was trapped plumb lbw for one by Doyle. Garry O’Connor was in fine form, though, and with enjoyed an excellent partnership with

Little. O'Connor managed to get to his half-century

before the overs ran out while Little was 37 not out as Read posted an imposing total of 221-4. Whalley's reply began well but professional

Graham Knowles (13) returned a catch to Quickie Oliver Newby with the total on 26. Pearson and Kevin Reed put on 60 for the sec

ond wicket with the former the aggressor. He cracked a well-deserved half-century but

lost his partner courtesy of a smart piece of bowling from Warren East ham for 18. Pearson followed five runs later for 53 steer

ing a catch straight to Sleep off Eastham. With 105 runs on the board, the weather

brought both sides off the field giving Read tory by virtue of their superior run rate.

title-holders Padiham. The Chatburn Roaders had Neil tint! Mark

C

Bolton to thank for their total of 182-8. Both combined astute defensive strokes with con

tempt of the bad ball as they scored 45 and 53

respectively. In Padiham's reply, six wickets front Neil

Bibbv and some remarkably economical figures from' professional Dexter Fitton consigned Padiham to a paltry total of 89 all out. Earlier, Clitheroe had won the toss and elect

ed to bat. Andy Burns and Neil Bolton opened the bat

ting but Burns was soon back in the pavilion for 10 after Umar Saddique got him to steer a catch

straight to Pankaj Tripathi. Fitton strode to the crease and looked in con

fident mood before misjudging a delivery front Mehmood and snicking the ball to Tripathi for

six.

Neil Bolton at the other end was producing some fine strokeplay and kept the scoreboard

ticking along nicely. New batsman Simon Bishop found the

boundary rope on a couple of occasions but could only spoon a catch straight back to Qasim

Ali for 14. Mark Bolton strode to the crease but soon

lost his namesake Neil, bowled by Mehmood for an eexcellen ‘ju.

Century inspires

with a stunning century from Cartledge C

the highlight. The locals won the toss and elected to

bat, but got off to a slow start, scoring 54

off 23 overs. The scoring rate picked up, and after Bill

Brooks set the foundations with a steady 19, Ted Topham batted well for 48 and Cartledge hit an unbeaten 102 off 19 overs, including three sixes and a four off one over. Chatburn closed on 213-4. Keighley's reply never really got started

and accurate bowling from openers Shovel- ton (2-21 off nine overs) and Lockley (5-18

off 11) put them on the back foot. Cartledge cleared up the tail with three

quick wickets for six runs from nine balls as Keighley were all out f<j>r 48.

LITH EROE produced a fine all-round display to comfortably beat reigning Jennings Ribblesdale Cricket League

Pile run-scoring, however, was maintained by Mark Bolton who fired Padiham's attack to all

parts of the ground. lie was given able support by Neil Bibby

before he was bowled by Ali for 17. Stephen Bishop (3) and Dave Glover (4 ) were both victims of Ali while Mark Coulter was run

out for three. However. Bolton made sure Padiham had a

considerable total to chase, remaining unbeaten

on 53. In reply, despite a steady start from Tripathi

and Anthony Hall. Andy MeNicholas’s men were bamboozled by some excellent bowling, in

particular from Bibby and Fitton. Bibby ended up with figures of 6-31 off 11

overs while Fitton’s equally' spectacular spell saw him take two wickets off eight overs, conceding only four runs! ft was Mark Hargreaves who grabbed the first wicket, however, as Hall was caught by

Burns for 11. Professional Ajay Sharma did not last long

before he spooned a catch up to Bibby off

Glover for a duck. Jon Hartley briefly threatened a big partner

ship with Tripathi but was then undone by Bibby for 19. Tripathi (33) was dismissed in similar fashion as Clitheroe grabbed a strangle

hold on the game. Bibby removed Mehmmood (0), McNicholas

*

(2) and Phil Metcalfe (5) for low scores while Fitton dismissed Abid Sharif for a duck and

Andy Robinson for a single. The coup dc grace was delivered by Bibby' as

Ali was last man out for six leaving Padiham high and dry on 89 all out. C l ith e ro e v P a d ih am

Title contenders Wanderers are held up by the elements

R

IBBLESDALE Wanderers were thwarted by the weather on Saturday at home against Bax

enden. The Jennings Ribblesdale League leaders looked on

course for victory' until rain forced both teams off the pitch with Ribblesdale requiring 45 runs for victory. Unfortunately the rain never ceased preventing David Howard’s men from claiming five points - they had to set

tle for just two instead. David “Onion”. O’Neill was again the chief tormentor

for Ribblesdale. He took 5-18 as Baxenden closed on 125-9 with David Usher scoring a fine half-century. In reply, the homesters lost Mike Ward early on for one but Richard Palmer (20) and Mark Davies (23) took the

score over 50 before both fell in quick succession. Professional Shahid Nawaz - who has recently signed a

new deal to stay at Church Meadow for two further years — and skipper Howard looked well set at the crease but the

rain brought proceedings to a premature end. The Wanderers are still eight points clear at the top of

the league and look well on course to claim the title off Padiham.

Batsman John stars as Whalley make it three wins on the trot

I

N-FORM John Kearsley’s 87 helped Whalley sec onds to a third win of the season - extending their unbeaten run to three games in the process.

The locals still lie bottom of the Jennings Ribblesdale

League First Division, but they have moved to within five points of Stacksteads and nine of Barnoldswick. On Saturday, they took on high-flying Read seconds in a

Ribble Valley derby. Read took first knock and made 172-7, but after the ram

handed Whalley a reduced target to aim at, Kearsley’s impressive innings saw the Station Road side to a nine-

wicket win on run rate. Leaders Ribblesdale Wanderers seconds maintained

their title charge with a 46-run win over Stacksteads. Wanderers totalled 155-9, despite Kemp’s efforts, as he

-maker Cartledge Chatburn victory

HATBURN enjoyed a comfort able win at home to Keighley Technical College on Saturday,

take much-needed points from a run-filled afternoon against Long Lee. Long Lee won a vital toss and chose to bat on what was obviously going to be a

good batting track. They managed to score 258 before they

were bowled out off only 38 overs. All the Chatburn bowlers came in for

some punishment, but among the wickets were Clarkson (2-66), Paul Craig (3-51)

and Brown (3-54). In reply, Chatburn did not get off to the

best of starts, but soon Simon Tomlinson and Craig were scoring freely. Craig’s wicket fell for an exciting 35 and

when Tomlinson was bowled for 60 off 59 balls, the game was effectively over. Simpson (24) and a late unbeaten 23

from Steve Edmundson took Chatburn's total to 189 before the innings ended.

took 7-57 for the strugglers. But Stacksteads were bowled out for a paltry 109 in

reply. Clitheroe seconds saw their faint title hopes dashed by

Padiham veteran Stephen Gee. The wily campaigner took 7-19 as the locals were dis

missed for 44 chasing 161-9. Salesbury also lost out, Great Harwood claiming a six-

wicket win after Welsh (5-25) and Cheesbrough (5-55) bowled the Ribchester Roaders out for 86. In the Second Division, Salesbury seconds had a similar

fate. They were all out for 60 chasing Settle's 150. The Third Division continues to be a tale of local domi

nance. Leaders Wanderers thirds crushed Burnley Belvedere.

Lloyd hit an unbeaten 61 in a total of 179-3, before O'Neill (6-24) played a pivotal role in Belvedere being all

out for 58. Read thirds are seven points adrift after their 69-run

win over Edenfield. Read made 139-9 before bowling their opponents out for

just 70. Clitheroe thirds declared at 162-2 against Great Har

However, Chatburn seconds failed to wood, after Eglin (70) and Neil Cartledge (56 not out) top-

scored. And Ponsonby took 5-12 as the Ciiffe Park side were

skittled for 42. , Salesbury thirds won on run rate against Padiham, with

Hall's unbeaten 95 in vain for the Arbories men. Padiham made 160-6, but Salesbury made the reduced

target with six wickets in hand. FIXTURES
