After a century of service, shoe shop is still making big strides forward

WELL organised shoe retailer D. Lord and Son is celebrating its cen tury this year — and keeping well up with modern times as a fifth genera tion of the family enters the busi

ness! Commitment to both traditional and

contemporary styles, large and varied stocks, competitive prices and a sales team dedicated to the very best in skill and service are the guiding principles which are seeing Lord's into its second

that it has been extended, modernised and improved many times over the century. There is plenty of fitting, display and "try a walk in them" space for customers to bene fit from the remarkably large and varied stock, and the commitment and skill of the

Lord's team. The shop was founded in 1900 by Mr

Dan Lord, taken over by his son, John, and then passed on, in 1960, to the third gener ation, Bernard, now the elder statesman of

the family. Mr Bernard Lord first sold shoes at the

age of eight and helped out as often as he could when a young schoolboy because his father was away serving in the forces dur

ing the war. "Up to quite recent times there was

nothing like the choice in footwear that there is today," says Mr Lord. "People have much clearer ideas now

what they want. Sometimes they are on the wrong lines, but no-one here will sell any thing unsuitable - we have a responsibility to our customers and to our reputation." The shop is now run by Mr and Mrs

Bernard Lord and Pauline Lord's daugh ters, Mrs Sue Ramsingh and Mrs Kath Pollard. Their own daughter, Vanessa and Sarah, are the fifth generation, helping with adult sales in the shop on Saturdays and holidays. They also get a chance to offer their views on buying trips. Mrs Pauline Lord only recently passed

on the job of creating all the window and interior shoe displays, something she had

done for many years. There is no pressure on customers at the

shop, but they must not be kept waiting either. Its popularity justifies a large team - Mrs Liz Beverley has been a key member for some 30 years and the family also val ues the contributions of more recent col leagues Mrs Christine Blakey and Mrs

Janice Shawcross. There are plenty of ideas culled from

several family sources to help the business keep ahead of style - it is a tricky task, foi orders have to be placed months in advance! "But there is still a market for tradition

al shoes, and an appreciation of traditional service. We get tourists coming in amazed to find a kind of shop which is dying out in other places," says Mr Lord. "We are now going into our second cen

tury because we have plenty to offer and invite anyone who has not tried us to call in and see for themselves."
