FRIDAY

IF you have been watching Jilly Cooper doing her wine thing on the television, you will know that this week she tasted cabernet sauvignon, three of which we stock. The best of these three is the Aus

tralian from Peter Lehmann at £7.89. A gold medal winner in this year's Wine Challenge, and also the best value one, is from La Baume. Domaine de la Baume is a winery

an internationally-experienced wine making team supervising all aspects of the wine production from harvest ing grapes in the cool of the night, right through to bottling. La Baume 1996 Cabernet Sauvi gnon at £3.99 is a full-bodied wine

with ripe berry fruit flavours and has a slight hint of oak on the finish. Best with most red meats, hearty stews and cheese. And while we just happen to be on

the subject of television shows, do not forget to watch "Vintners' Tales" tonight on BBC 2.

ON hearing that Emma Noble (of

i"The’Price is Right" fame) was to star in a Ben Elton play, I thought the results may have been disas trous, given her lack, or should I say knack, of acting. But the role of Brooke Daniels, a

former nude model aching for a big break, could not have suited her more. Her actual acting ability was dubious at times, with her dodgy Liza Minelli-like American accent, but she was obviously quite happy playing a part which so mirrored her career to date (if you imagine this happening in Kent, rather than Hol lywood). Back to the play. "Popcorn" is

onds after the curtain rises? The plot centres around film direc

described as "a gripping and thought- provoking comedy-fantasy thriller”, but the old Ben Elton stand-up material soon rears its head, I mean, who else could bring discussions about genitals into the first few sec-

tor Bruce Delamitri (John Bowler), the creator of violent movies, who, after winning an Oscar for one of his films, is brought face-to-face with real-life murderers claiming to be inspired by his films. Paul Brennan, who plays Wayne, and Clara Sala- man (Scout), his partner in crime and the love of his weird, distorted life, are absolutely brilliant as the trigger- happy Mall Murderers, the kind of gun-toting psychotics Delamitri has glamorised in his Tarantinoesque films. A hostage crisis ensues and the results are nothing short of explosive. "Popcorn" is an absolutely brilliant

novel, which has been cleverly brought to the stage, and it has

opened a debate on whether movies tha t represent killing as cool are responsible for the violence in today's society. But as every person and organisation, from parents, to the US Government, to the people watching the hostage crisis on TV, Elton lays the blame at one door - God. The play won Elton the best new

comedy award at the 1998 Laurence Olivier Awards and I wait, with anticipation, until his new novel "Blast from the Past" is brought to the theatre. And even if you are not a particu

larly great fan of Ben Elton, "Pop corn" will have you laughing all the

way home. VICKY CARLIN
