Soccer star Chris plays Santa
SO C C E R s ta r Chris Sutton exchanged his blue and white Black burn Rovers strip for Santa’s red and white rob e s when he made a guest appearance at a tiny tots Christmas party. Chris's visit to Elaine’s
Day Care C en tre at Brockhall Village was filmed by a Sky Sport pro duction team compiling a profile about the centre forward. “Chris played his part so
well that many of the par ents did not know that Father Christmas was the Rovers’ famous striker,”
said Elaine Eastham, who runs the centre. Parent Chris took time
off from his Santa role to be interviewed by a Sky presenter and afterwards
had a busy time handing out g i f ts on behalf of E la in e to d o z en s o f youngsters. During the party, the
children, all wearing fancy dress, entertained their parents to a programme of festive songs and carols. The babies, placed in colourful boxes, were “ in disguise” as Christmas presents; the two and th re e -y e a r -o ld s were dressed as reindeers; and the four-year-olds wore a v a r ie ty o f in geniou s outfits. Elaine added; “There
was a wonderful atmo sphere and the party was made even more memora ble by the Sky recording, which has already been screened."
Future for Scouts secure
STEADY fund-raising support means that Scouts and Guides in Langho can face the future with confi dence, despite fading hoi>es of being given a new
“home” . Subsidy cuts have effec
t iv e ly in c rea s ed the charges for the use of their school hall headquarters. And, as reported at the time, the financial outlook meant that an offer of accomodation from Brock- hall developer Mr Gerald Hitman was g r e a t ly
appreciated. But Mr Hitman has
never followed up his offer and officials of the Scouts and Guides think he must have changed his mind. "W e would s till be
grateful to hear from him,” says Group Scout Leader Mr John Swar-
brick. “ But we think it likely we will have to stop in the school, and we are fortunate that we have a strong fund-raising team. We have also increased subscriptions to help with
costs . " ___________ Chemists’ rota

Mr Paul Adnitt, aged
44, the new headteacher at St James’s CE Primary School, has more than a passing interest in music and drama and its effect on children. He has produced his
own pantomimes and plays in the past and he believes
creativity has a significant part to play in a child’s education. On his first day in the
j o b , on M o n d a y , he stressed: “The three R’s are an important part of the educative process, but I believe you must have creativity for a child to reach his or her full poten tial. I want to do the basics very well, but to have a creative outlet for a child is very important indeed.” Mr Adnitt, who lives in
Higher Ramsgreave, on the border between Black burn and the Ribble Val ley, is also interested in environmental matters. He thinks children should have a good grounding in the subject which, he says, can only be good for the future of our society. St James’s School has a
brook running through its grounds and he says there is a great deal of potential to introduce environmen tal studies based around the stream.
For six years Mr Adnitt
was headteacher at St L a u r e n c e ’ s P r im a ry School, Chorley. Before that, he taught at four schools in Birkenhead. He is a graduate of Chester College, he is married to another headteacher but the couple have no children. At 44, he still does very well to play football and it
is his stated aim to con tinue playing as long as his
legs will keep going. He has a lingering affection for his home-town football club, Preston North End, but for many years has been a convert to the blue and white halves of Black burn Rovers. With plans to build a
new classroom extension at school at the end of the month, and with a new d e p u ty h e a d t e a c h e r expected in March, St James's is undergoing dra matic changes and an increase in the 346 pupils is envisaged. Mr Adnitt, however
expects the ethos of the school to continue, with high expectations for all who attend. He said: “ If you expect great things, you are more likely to get them. I will expect good behaviour, hard work and pupils who do their very best.” (CAT 6021)
