Comfortable Clitheroe complete twelfth win

Fleetwood 19, Clitheroe 29

A COMFORTABLE, if not convincing victory on Saturday gave Clitheroe’s rugby men their 12th win of the season. The Littlemoor side were boosted by the

alf for the holidaying Dave Barnes.

return of boisterous young prop forward Andrew “Tubber” Thomber, and fresh from a modelling assignment winger Peter Jaques. h The versatile Dave Watson filled in at scrum

On a firm, d ry p itch th e locals got off to a cracking s ta r t an d soon forced a p enalty 15

metres out. Ebllowing a clever set move i t was the Ulster

man Scott Christie who scored under the posts. Watson converted and Clitheroe again scored

on their next foray into Fleetwood territory. From a scrum 20 metres o ut, number eight

Mike Francis picked up and, showing remark able speed for one so bulky, touched down almost unmolested. Fleetwood then claimed a score for themselves

before Jaques fielded a loose ball on half way and drove on, linked well with the forwards and was on hand for the scoring pass a t the finish. T h e conversion was missed b u t Fleetwood

struck back with a try of their own just before half-time. The first quarter of the second half saw the

home side’s best period of the game and Clitheroe’s laxness was punished when the lead

was cut to only two points. This, however, only spurred the maroon and

golds into action. When the Fleetwood fly-half was scragged in

his own 22, some ferocious play then ensued - and Watson was under th e posts for a deserved

to allow the try. Stung into action b y this travesty of justice,

Clitheroe again went on the offensive and a fine forward surge, with Martin Wigley and replace

ment lock Bob Wilkinson prominent, created th e space for centre Ian Ibbotson to claim his first try of the season. A penal ty goal la te r b y Watson t ied u p th e

match for Clitheroe to end a scrappy and some times bad tempered affair. Clitheroe Cavaliers 20, Fleetwood 5

ON Saturday the Cavaliers waved good bye to a dull January with their first win

onds due to injury, illness and cancellations —not to mention two defeats against Aspull andWharfedale.

of 1997 against Fleetwood. January had been a poor month for the sec

But this weekend was different, the Littlemoor

crowd were treated to a fine display of power house rugby from the forwards and some fero cious tackling in the backs. With Steven Taylor captaining the tide for the

day, th e Cavaliers opened the scoring with a kick-and-chase try from Moorby, only for Fleet- wood to pull level with a disputed score.

who burst through the heart of the opposition i defence to score under the posts. The Cavaliers never looked back and in the sec

ond half “Old Boy” George Giles skidded over for a well-deserved t ry after a great push over

by the forwards. The final score was 20-5 and Paul Proctor was

named man-of-the-match mainly for his excel

lent work in the loose play, bu t also for a tremen dous head-on tackle which felled the strong run ning Fleetwood full back in real style.

St Mary’s Ball 27, Malsis 12

ST Mary’s Hall made it 14 wins from 15 games as they coasted to victory over their

local rivals from Keighley. F irs t half tries from d a p p e r Tommy Barnes,

pack leader Daniel Hayhurst and scrum-half Clive Burrows put the game beyond the

Yorkshire tide’s reach. Hayhurst, a tower of strength in th e pack, left

the field three times with a bleeding nose in the WAOAT

second half and this coincided with the visitors having a good spell, running in two tries as the

home tide relaxed. ’ However, further tries to the ubiquitous Barnes

and the blood-spattered Hayhurst sealed a well-

deserved win, with Barnes converting the tnes and adding a penalty goal for good measure. • On adjacent pitches the seconds triumphed

39-14 over Maids and the Under U s won 12-7. Nobby Rodriguez was a t his elusive best for the

home side, who were missing th re e players throughinjury.

• At the weekend the Under 12 side, made up of players from all three tides, travel to Broms- grove to ta k e p a r t in th e D a i ly Teleg rap h National Under 12 Tournament. Coach Chris Moxon thinks they have a good chance of mak ing the finals.

wasn’t the landslide victory that it might

have been, but although things were tense until the final whistle, Rovers held on for a crucial 2-1 win over West Ham United on Sat

urday at Ewood. The scoreline flattered the troubled Ham

mers, but the points were all that mattered and they lifted Rovers to 13th. The goals that Rovers did score in the 36th and

39th minute via the boot of Kevin Gallacher add head of Chris Sutton did originate from West Ham mistakes, but the quick-thinking and clinical finishing that followed was excel

lent.

I t was only a pity that Rovers’ passing and movement wasn’t rewarded by the conversion

of any of several chances. It could have been four or five at the interval,

but Rovers settled for two and looked to under

line their dominance after the break. Gallacher hit the firet, robbing Ian Bishop

before detonating a 25yarder into the comer, and the unmarked Sutton headed his 11th of the season when Tim Sherwood took advan tage of Marc Rieper and Julian Dicks' hesitan cy to pick him out. West Ham made for a frantic finale when sub

stitute Rio Ferdinand strode forward to crash the ball past Tim Flowers on 66 minutes, but Rovers limited the number of hairy moments and moved further towards dispelling relega

tion doubts. There was further good news at the weekend

when the rumour-mongers were put to rest when Sven Goran Eriksson confirmed he WOULD be taking over a t Ewood and not going back on his word and going to Lazio. Rovers fans will be keeping their eyes peeled

for Blackburn’s international representatives in the week, with Colin Hendry, Kevin Gallacher and Billy McKinlay looking to feature in Scot land’s re-arranged game with Estonia on Tues day, while the Carling Player of the Month for January, Tim Flowers, and Graeme Le Saux are in the England squad to face the Azzuri on Wednesday. And another international in the form of Pol

ish striker Marek Citko likely to be confirmed as a RoverB player in a £2.75m deal from

WldzewLodz. Cilko could have to wait until Rovers travel to

Anfield later this month before making his debut, as it is unlikely he will have got Us work permit in time for Rovers’ next game a week on Saturday against Coventry in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

passing and movement, and were the better side in the first half, but failed to test Marlon

as he looks for better fortunes against his for mer club York.

Barnes will be out for more goals on Saturday .

, Last time out he hobbled off injured, and the

Clarets fell to a hugely disappointing 1-0 defeat. On Tuesday Stockport County’s shadow squad

knocked the Clarets out of the Auto Wind screens Shield with a 1-0 win at Turf Moor. County had eight changes from the ride that

played against Brentford on Saturday, while the Clarets chose to experiment by starting with out three centre halves for the first time this

season. Burnley started brightly, but County began to _ .

impose themselves on the game and Canadian Martin Nash put them ahead on 19 minutes, crashing the ball home inside the near post from Keiran Durkan’s cross. County should have increased their lead

through Andy Mutch and Matthew Bond headers, but they failed to punish the Clarets. Sixteen-year-old Colin Carr-Lawton made his

first team debut, coming on at half-time for Horn Robinson, but he wasn’t helped to shine as Burnley strug^ed to piece anything together further up the field, and again the closest they came to scoring was via set-plays.

t With 20 minutes remaining Nigel Gleghoms

header from Paul Smith’s corner looked to have crossed the line before Damon Searle made contact with his hand, but the referee deemed that it hadn’t, Searle was sent off, and Burnley had a penalty. David Eyres smashed the penalty low to Neil

Edwards’ left, but the keeper pulled off a stun- ningstop.

Burnley then failed to take advantage of their . . .

numerical superiority, and have now gone four games without a win.
