FURTHER indication that house builders are in for better times, were confirmed by the Rt Hon. Sir Nor man Fowler MP, at the British Housebuilder of the Year Awards, which were staged at London’s Hilton Hotel recently. Sir Norman, who chairs the'NHBC

(National House Building Council), the country’s leading home war ranties organisation, attended the

awards as guest of honour. The British Housebuilder of the Year

Awards are organised by Express Newspapers and supported by Mid land Bank, British Gas, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, New Homes Marketing Board and the NHBC. Th e awards have become the

longest established and recognised

vehicle within the housebuilding industry for acknowledging and rewarding “Quality and Service”. The awards are unique because they are judged from research con ducted among new, homebuyers

.. throughout the UK. Homebuyers who purchased a

brand new home between April 1st, 1995 and March 31st, 1996 were

asked to judge the performance of their builders over 11 service cate gories, on a scale from excellent to

very poor. Some 350 key housebuilding indus try representatives attended the lun- '

cheon, which was hosted by Lord Stevens, chairman of Express Newspapers pic.

' In his address, Sir Norman said:.

“After a very difficult period, the corn-; ing year will see substantial growth in the housing market. He’ stated that, the industry was 30% up over the last three months, compared with the previous year, and added that, the prospects for sustained growth in the housing market is the best for 20 years —: with the lowest mortgage interest rates for over-20

years." He also said that the quality of new

homes had improved dramatically over the last 10 to 20 years due to a rise in construction standards. He

reported that the NHBC currently has 1.7m homes under warranty

and only 0.7% of all policy holders report a difficulty.. , He said, “It, is essential that quality

“There are no grounds at all to believe the recovery in the housing market is faltering. “But if this trend continues over the next couple of months then we could take a different view,” commented a society spokesman. And the Halifax is still sticking to its prediction that house prices, on average will increase by around 7% this year compared to 8.4% in 1996. •House prices normally show a

- . In.his opening address, Lord

Stevens congratulated the NHBC ■ on reaching its 60th anniversary. He

said “Far from taking early retire- ment, the organisation seems set to continue to make a major contribu tion both to the housebuiding indus try and to the quality of life for many millions of people. “With 20,000 regional house

builders on its books, who are build ing 90% of all new homes in the UK

and with its Buildmark Warranty and other insurance s chemes, the NHBC is in a position to speak for the industry with great authority. Rising orders in UK construction

: have led to the most optimistic out look for the past six years. The; Building Employers Confederation are forecasting an annual growth in output of 2-3% for the next three years. The National Council of Build ing Material Producers have also said that construction output should
