the aims of the a re a ’s new sport and leisure manager. By Natalie Cox

M Just four weeks ago 37-year-old Chris

Hughes took up his new post at the bor ough council offices in Clitheroe. For the past 12 years he has worked in

a similar position in Blackburn and before that was a sports development officer in Birmingham. His new post brings with it a variety of

.£3250

areas for Mr Hughes to cover. These include looking at the development of existing facilities, working with a vari

AKING best use of the Kib ble Valley’s facilities is one of

ety of sporting groups, giving advice on different funding agencies and promot

ing special events. Another project which he will be close

ly involved with, is the production of a five-year sport and leisure strategy. Mr Hughes firmly believes this will have a

big impact in the Ribble Valley.. The first step to creating the plan is to

carry out market research throughout the area to find out what facilities peo ple want, which sports they take part in now, as well as a wide range of other information which will not only build up a profile of the present situation, but

also pinpoint future needs. This research is set to commence in the

next couple of weeks and from that a formula will be developed which will try

and tackle issues raised. Said Mr Hughes: “We hope to have

some things in place within a couple of months and have a workable document with both short and long-term issues to

beworkedon. . . .

“The re are a lot o f good things that already go on.

agencies and, perhaps, bringing togeth er examples of good practice and get ting a more co-ordinated approach to

sport I think would benefit everyone”. Mr Hughes is pictured in his new Kib

ble Valley base. (CAT 6590) Legion have leaders in their sights

determined effort , to catch Billington A, run away leaders of the Clitheroe and District : Snooker League First

R

OYAL British Legion are making a

Division. Helped by a 36-break from

Graham Blackburn, Legion recorded a whitewash victo ry over Rimington B to reduce the gap to just 14 points. The leaders, who have been

beaten just once all season, ground out a tight victory against Conservative Club. The two sides meet in the

latest rounds of fixtures. The bottom three teams

were all well beaten and it is increasingly looking like

perm any two from three for the drop. There is a three-horse race

in the Second Division for the title, although fourth- placed Chipping are not quite out of the frame. Low Moor maintained their

lead with a good win a t Waddington B, while both Chatburn teams are locked together in second place.

Kings Arms defeat nearest rivals

LEADERS Kings Arms A held off the challenge to their top-spot in the Premier Division of the Clitheroe and District Pool League with a com prehensive 6-1 win over nearest rivals Dog and

Partridge A. That win extended their lead

from three points to seven. • Buck A lie a further point

adrift after they moved third with a 4-3 win over Higher

Buck A, as Dog and P a r tridge B slipped to a 4-3 defeat a t home to Royal British Legion A. It was a similar story in the

First Division as White Hart stretched out in front. They had been tied on 57

points with Waggon and Horses, but White Har t whitewashed bottom team Craven Heifer while Waggon lost 43 at Royal Oak A. Read Constitutional Club A doubled their lead in the Sec ond Division, beating Bay Horse A 6-1, and they now hold a 10-point advantage over Higher Buck B, who lost by the odd frame against Bridge B, who moved to within two points of second place. But in the Third Division, Hurst Green Club clawed

back a point despite losing, and White Lion now top the table by only two. Lion lost 4-3 against Horse

gon and Horses. Second Division

out Cup dominated the Clitheroe and District Darts League scene this

T

week. Kings Arms A faced Dog

and Partridge, with the Dog stealing an early lead, win ning the first two games before Kings opened their account. The Dog held the upper hand until the seventh game

but Kings took the next two to level the match at 4-4. The final game went the full

distance before Dog checked in the third leg to take then- place in the final. The second semi was

between Horseshoe and Black Horse, both in the Second Division at opposite ends of the table. The Shoe kicked off in fine

style, winning the bull and the first five games, dropping only three legs out of a pos sible 15 to storm into the final on Monday, February 17th.

Exciting matches decide final line-up

HE semi-finals of the Mick Patten Knock

Clitheroe entertained Chor-

ley at the Dog and Partridge in their tenth match of the Lancashire Superleague sea son. A hard-fought first game,

going to five legs, went to Mick Eunson, giving the locals the lead, and that was followed by three players in overdrive taking their games in three straight legs, Andy Porter, Adrian Bubbins and Andy Gudgeon, who hit the highest average of the day with 90.18 per throw, using just 50 darts. But Clitheroe lost the next

three despite Jimmy Holden hitting Clitheroe’s only max imum 180 of the day." Jack Hayward and Craig

Jones hit back, with Choriey winning the last game to leave the score Clitheroe 6, Choriey 4. The next match is on Febru

ary 2 4 th when Clitheroe travel to meet divisional leaders Oldham.
