World stage for Claire’s views

CHILDREN in Holton- by-Howland have been

celebrating the parish church’s patron saints

day in a custom that has its origins in the Middle Ages. T h e v i l l a g e w a s

granted a royal charier by Edward I I I in the l i lh century to hold a fa ir to ce leb ra te St Peter and St Paul’s day. Over the centuries the annual event has faded away* leaving the par ish annual sports day organised by the Chil dren’s Committee. Held every year on

the Saturday nearest to the saints’ day, the sports are for all chil dren in th e pa r ish between the ages o f three and 11. O u r p h o t o g r a ph

shows some o f the 50 youngsters who look part in a short service before an afternoon full o f sports* a tea in the village hall and a fancy dress competition to

round the day off.

be available at all times. Smoke alarm

YET another possible fire was caught by Clitheroe

officer. Mr Dave McCrnth. 'Hi.- iiii-jili-nl m»xunvil at

Creen Park Court at 7-lU a.m. on Saturday, after the resident put a pan on the cooker and then went for a bath. Clitheroe Fire Brigade

They were aimed at increasing youth participation in Scouting and giving voung people a voice in the decision making bodies in the movement.

Despite her nerves, Claire was

delighted to attend the conferences. She said: “ I felt really honoured taking part and was quite surprised to be offered a place.”

Her name was put forward after she

demonstrated her enthusiasm and com mitment to the movement both at

regional and national level. Before the conference, Claire travelled to London almost every weekend to prepare with the other delegates.

The conference was not Claire’s first

time as an international delegate. Two years ago she attended a similar con
