Whalley sign off in style
W H A L L E Y J u n io r s c e le b r a te d a n o th e r fine sea son in lo cal y outh fo o tbal l leagues with their annual presentation evening. The Under nines side, playing their first games
o f competitive football, didn't let anyone down. The boys gave 100 per cent in every game, with
the highlight being the 3*1 win over local rivals Langho. The Under 10s got o f f to a sticky start, but
slowly started to give teams a hard time. When the side won their first game o f the sea
son against Islington at home, the celebrations were as if Whalley had won the league. They never gave up and can’t wait for the new
season. For the Under 13s to improve on last year's
third-place achievement was going to lake something special. After a stuttering start they put together a 14- game unbeaten run which saw the team rocket
to the top o f the league, producing football
which was a joy to watch. Things were tense going into the final game
with just a draw needed to win the title. A lost minute equaliser settled the issue, and . the double was on.
. Unfortunately a late winner in a hard-fought game saw the cup go elsewhere, but the side is eager to gel started again. Expectations were high for the Under 11s after
a top-six finish last year. However, despite being very hard to beat, they finished tenth.
, • ;
- They did reach the quarter-finals in the Con solation Cup and won the GR Trophy, beating Blue Star 9-1 on aggregate.

GREAT Harwood side Commie repeated their success of last year by winning the annual Calderstoncs and Whitbread Hilltop 5-A-Side competition last week.
They beat Low Moor in a penalty shoot-out after the final had finished 0-0. Commie had beaten Great Harwood Rovers in the semi-final while Low Moor had seen
off Kings Arms, both courtesy of penally shoot-outs. Darren Ormerod of Commie was awarded the W. H. Good Top Goalscorer prize while
King Street of Whalley were named the F. Parkinson Most Sporting Team. Low Moor keeper Steve Clarke, who saved a penally during the final with Commie, was
named as the Park View Player of the Tournament. Organisers wished to thank sponsors Owd Neds of Mitton, Birtwell and Co of Sabdcn and Pollard and Foster of Whalley for all their support.

THE Ted Tomlinson Trophy was held at Whalley Bowling Club and Frank Corban from Whallcy’s B team emerged as the winner.
A total of 61 competitors
took part and produced some exciting games, despite the difficult weather condi tions. Corban, playing on his own
green, took on .Richard Turner of Leisure Hour in the final, and had the best of the early stages to lead 10-7.
Turner then raced into the
lead with an amazing nine- break to make the score 16- 10 and then 18-13. Corban staged a comeback
to level things at 18 across and Turner scored a single at the next end.
But he was unable to score again as Corban ran out deserved winner. Trophies and cash prizes were presented by Mrs Nancy Goode and Miss Snrah-Louisc Tomlinson,
sister and grand-daughter of -Ted Tomlinson, in whose memory the competition is held.
