Edie passes a century


FAMILY and friends gathered to celebrate the 101st birthday of Mrs Edie Baily at the Manor House residen­ tial home, Chatburn.


Mrs Baily, a resident for 10 years, attributes


| h e r lo n g l i f e to moderate habits, hav­ ing never smoked and only occasionally hav­ ing had a drink.


At the age of 14,- Mrs


Baily started work as a machinist, an activity which she was able to practise expertly — even into her 90s.


' She moved from London to Buxton dur­ ing the war and, from there, to Clitheroe and

then to Chatburn. , She lived with her

before marrying a professional cricketei and moving to Selkirk! She then came back to


Lancashire, living and working in Lancas ter, where she ran a sweet shop.


She returned to Scotland when her hus­


band got a job as cricket coach at a boys boarding school. Mrs Ellis inivUeulaiy enjoyed looking after pupils at the scho and refers to them as her boys.
