w o r ld . . You can g e t on a train in Clith- eroe and t ra v e l to M an ch e s te r Airport for flights to all comers of the globe, and you can buy a Euro Star ticket for the Continent, via

the Channel Tunnel. The borough is bounded by Lan

caster, Ingleton and Skipton in the north, with Pendle, Burnley and

Blackburn to the east and Preston to the south. Clitheroe, the largest town in the valley, is situated in the middle of the borough, ju s t off th e A59 t ru n k ro ad , th e main a r t e r y f rom th e w e s t c o a s t through to the east. I t is only a s h o r t d r iv e to th e m o to rw a y network: the M6, which goes north to the Lake District and south to

Birmingham and London; th e M65, which gives easy access to

. th e M66 (Bury/Manchester); and the M62 (Leeds/Hull/Liverpool).

Longridge, th e second large st

town in the borough, is situated n e a r th e B6243 and is less than

half-an-hour’s dr ive away from Preston and also within easy reach of the M6.

A n e tw o rk o f good c o u n try

roads links the borough’s 45 vil lages to the two main towns and bus services c a te r for both local com m u n i tie s and to u r is ts and often link up with the train time table along the Ribble Valley rail line from Clitheroe to Blackburn. , F o r instance, you can board a

bus in Hurst Green, near the in- temationally-famous Stonyhurst College, and then travel to Man ches te r Airport by public t ra n s por t for flights around the world. Meanwhile, the Ribble Valley is a desirable place in which to live

— and to visit — and the fact that it is close to some of the North- West’s industrial heartlands make i t p o p u la r - w i th c om m u te r s . Travel-to-work a re a s by c a r — and tra in — include Blackburn, Greater Manchester and Preston. Some say th a t commuters often

play no p a r t in community life and a dividing line between Iong-es- ta b l i s h e a r e s id e n t s an d n ew comers develops. But i t does not have to be like th a t and many com munities have benefited from com m u te rs b r inging new ideas and energies into village life. The fact th a t people travel out

of th e b o ro u g h to w o rk m u s t surely have had some bearing on th e fact th a t -Regional Railways and Lancashire County Council have given th e i r backing to an hourly tra in service from Clith eroe to Manchester Victoria, a fte r the line had stood dormant since th e 1960s. Obviously, a n o th e r influence is i ts potential for bring ing tourists into the area.

Now a private travel company is

operating a ticket and information service a t the station and is justly pro u d o f th e fa c t th a t you can book your tickets, via rail or sea, to anywhere on th e Continent. Small town s ta t io n s e lsew h e re usually have to direct passengers to larger centres for such services. Manchester Airport, the fastest
