Pulling punters as well as That’s the Swan at Whalley Racing

Club Limited by Matthew Evans

A THREE foot tall p o rc e la in jo ck ey stands on the end of the bar at the Swan Hotel, Whalley, clad in a yellow silk with grey sleeves.

When Captain Barlow pro gressed from school mto marriage, a family and an army career, his chil

horses would always be part of his life.

The colours represent the former corps colours of the landlord, Captain H a r ry Barlow, who served in the army for 28years.

The jockey catches the eye of every customer who orders a pint. To the unacquainted, his life- . like appeal commands a

closer look and, before the observer is aware of it; he has been drawn to

a sporting life that is enjoying a keen resur-

ence in Ribble Valley’s u s t l in g c e n t r e of Whalley.

His enthusiasm for horse racing was rekindled la s t y e a r when he bought Swan at Whalley on tne impeccable judge ment of his friend and top trainer, Jack Berry. The su rg e of local interest came with the success of his first tri umph, and the racing club was bolstered by two prominent new members, P r id e of Whalley and Abbott of Whalley.

dren inherited his dedi cated interest.

T h e o v e rw h e lm in g response to the Pride at Whalley share offer, prompted Mr Barlow to float "The Abbott.”

1995 starting order at Doncaster three weeks

Captain Barlow is a tra

ditionalist with a great passion for horses. The fact that he named his ra c e h o r s e Swan a t Whalley, and has his jockey racing in his old army colours, is testa ment to that. Captain Barlow, raised on a farm in South Wales, has an interest in all things e q u in e t h a t w a s drummed into him by his next door neighbour, a c e r ta in Mr David A Broome. show-jumping Olym pian, Broome took him cantering round his huge stable yard from the age of. three. From then on,

It is a non-profit-making club but all prize money and receipts from any sale of the horse at the end of the flat season will be shared equally b e tw e en th e sh a re holders.

A recent coach trip to see th e horse s a t Ja ck Berry’s stables at Cock- e r h am — w h e r e England football captain David Platt owns a run ner — was over-sub- scribed, so a convoy of cars followed up too! Says Captain Barlow: “The horses have really caught the imagination of tne villagers. So many people have been talking to me about i t and everybody has been ask ing about shares.”

Indeed, the interest has been widespread, with

taken a piece of the Pride of Whalley home with them as a lasting memento of their stay in the village, and many of them may return sooner rather than later if the horse starts reaching the winning post.

Jack Berry, whose 129 winners last year put him as the leading numerical trainer in the country, genuinely rates the chances of success for the three Whalley horses. He said: “They are in really good condi tion and are capable of doing very well. People often think that owning a racehorse is beyond their means, but with the villagers getting together and sharing in the excitement like this, it is a great way to do it. They deserve a winner and I hope they get one.”

It comes after a successful debut season last year when th e g e ld in g excelled to take a title at Chester races (pictured above), when ridden by Gary Carter.

Top North West jockey John Carroll is the regu lar rider of Swan at Whalley. He won 27 times in Dubai over the winter.

Pupils set out to save planet

MUSIC filled the hall of Whalley CE Primary School when our pho tographer found pupils busy with a dress rehearsal for their production o f “ Project Rescue Save the
