.Objective 5b rural funding for the Rib- ble Valley.

The following Ribble Val ley wards are eligible for funding: Aighton, Bailey and CnaigTey; Bolton- by-Bowland; Bowland, Newton and Slaidburn; Chatburn; Chipping; Gisburn; Rimington; Grindleton and West Bradford; Waddington; Wiswell and Pendleton; Ribchester. Other eligi ble areas in Lancashire are parts of Pendle, Lancaster and Wyre.

In December 1994, a strat egy document was approved for the whole o f th e N o r th e r n Uplands, which provides an integrated plan of action for the next six years. This includes a bid for grants of over

by Mark Hendrick,

£82m. for the next six year period.

These resources will be used in a wide range of activities, complement ing other funding which will assist the process of economic development of the Ribble Valley.

The major aim is to reverse the trend of rural decline with the four main p rio rities being:

• Economic development and diversification.

• Tourism. • C o m m u n i development.

t y

• Environmental enhance ment and conservation.

The first set of projects is c u r r e n t ly bein g assessed and I hope that the “green light” will be given for the selected

projects at the end of this month.

I hope that it will then not be too long before residents of the Ribble Valley begin to see the real benefits of money from th e European Union.

I will keep you up to date with any developments in future editions of the European Viewpoint.

LAST week, the Euro pean Parliament unani mously agreed to an aid package of 300 million ECU for Northern Ire land.

I hope that this will give a big boost to the peace

and, especially as both Catholic and Protestant

politicians will be work ing together to make sure the aid is used to give the maximum bene fit. The European Com mission president, Jac ques Santer, will be visiting Northern Ire land next week and the European Parliament is

shortly to hold a confer ence on peace and reconciliation.

The European Union is

definitely playing its part to ensure that the current peace in North ern Ireland becomes a permanent peace.

I WAS very pleased to note that Lancashire County Council was a winner in the European Urban and Regional P la n n in g A w a rd s ,
