Sun shines on royal event

THREE days of hot sunny weather, combined with a programme offering entertainment for all the family, has ensured a record year

for the Royal Lancashire Show. The event, held at Astley Park, Chorley, saw more people through the gates,

including an increase in the number of farmers, and more trade stands and exhibi tors than for many years.

Show director Mr Bill Jones said he was delighted

into putting on an event such as ours,” he contin ued, “but I have a grand group of helpers and it is all thanks to them that this year has turned out to

be so successful.” Chairman of the Royal Lancashire Agricultural

Society Mr Clifford Hargreaves thanked everybody for their hard work and congratulated society secretaiy

Susan Walsh for co-ordinating such a good show. “This year we have had more people through the gates, more trade stands and more exhibitors than we have had for a very, very long time — it will undoubtedly be a

record year for the show,” he added. Mr Sam Wood, the society’s vice-chairman, who has

farmed all his life, expressed his pleasure at the increase in the number of agricultural tradestands. “We have had a struggle over the past few years to

FOR the 75th anniversary of the Women’s Institute movement, Ribble .Valley mem bers manned a stall, with a theme of Then

Our dairy section entries were well up on previous years and the quality of cattle was

superb.”

movement has moved with the times. Initially a radical organisation, cutting across

all social barriers in order to improve the condi tions of women in rural settings, the WI became a campaigning force after the Second World War and it is now at the heart of all things modern. In the Betty Sanderson competition for the best- made sampler — an embroidered picture — the

winner incorporated the theme, showing every thing going on throughout WI history.

A particularly interesting part of the stall was y the comparison of a pair of Targe bloomers of 7o

ears ago with the skimpy modern-day item.

■ And could it be said that women of 75 years ago had a more realistic, rather than idealistic, sense

of themselves than women of today? In our picture are: left to right, hack, Mrs Susan
