AN awiinl-winninc: Clitli- oroo restaurateur has said that local shopkeepers should stop their Christmas humbug and sort out their
own 3 uletide lighting. Mr David Brown, of Brown’s Bistro, 3 ot'k Street, has aroused
shopkeepers of expecting every thing to tie done for litem. But more controversy sur rounded the Christmas’ lights
Beware risk of fire is
message
VIGILANCE' is the mes sage to householders throughout t he Kibble Valiev as Christmas trim- ; mings invade our homes. Lancashire's chief fire
officer. Mr Gordon Kussel. warns of the increased risk of fire in the homo, par ticularly as houses become more crowded with friends and relatives visiting tor celebrations. "The traditional trap
pings. such as decorations, candles, wrapping paper, t'hristmas tree and lights, can all become potential fire hazards.” he says. “ In homes whe re
smokers are present. always ensure that plenty
of ashtrays fin* cigarette ends and matches are available. Keep boxes of matches and lighters out of the reach of children. Do not smoke in bed, ! especially if you have been drinking. It is so eas\ to > fall asleep with a lighted cigarette in your hand.
) "Last thing at nijzlil i
ensure that all heating | appliances are switched off, ashtrays have been j emptied safely and all j electrical appliances not designed to stav on have been switched off and unplugged. Finally, close all doors.” Mr Kussel stresses the
importance of ensuring that everyone in the family knows what to do in l he e ve n t of a fi re .
saga this week, with the news that the town's lights have been sold to llyndlmrn Council. Mr Brown said: "No one has
made an effort. There are two Christmas trees in the whole of the centre of Clitheroe and abso lutely nothing at my end of town.
It is pitiful. “We can't just wait for the
council to do everything. I f everyone had done their bit out side their own shop, then Clith
eroe would have looked much nicer, but the simple fact is, save for one or two shopkeepers, absolutely no one has made the
effort.” Last week, Clitheroe Chamber
of Trade member Mr Nigel l’ratt said the lack of Christmas lights in the town and the general calibre of display stemmed from an F.C directive banning the usual aeross-street lighting. The change had left the cham
ber struggling to raise sponsor ship for a replacement scheme, then lumbered with delays, due to the weather and difficulties in meeting stringent safety requirements.
But Mr Brown said that shop keepers are responsible for their own Christ nuts lighting and. next year, should let the 5 ule tide spirit shine more brightly outside their own shops, before
complaining. Local traders contacted the "Advertiser and Times” this,,
week, expressing concern that ] Clitheroe’s festive lights hadJ been sold to llyndburn.
j Ironically, the centre ol|
Accrington, pictured on the front) page of last week's newspaper.; has been vaunted throughout; Hast Lancashire for its resplen-| dent Christmas lighting.

T1IK Ribblestlale County High School student responsible for the design of the Young Knterprise winning advertisement was this week absolutely delighted.
Michelle Kelly (15),
has already set her sights on a career in graphic design and advertising and the advertisement was a perfect opportunity for her to put some of her talent to the lest.
A member of the
school Young Knterprise company "Hot Shots” marketing team, Michelle spent some time earlier in the year on work experience at Kibble Valley Borough Council's offices in Clitheroe.
The "Hot Shots"
company is operating its own photographic products business and its advertisement was judged to he the best one of the eight submitted by the different Young Knterprise groups to publicise their nnmutl Christmas trade fair.
The companies nil
took part in the event, organised by Ilyndhurn and Kibble Valley Young Knterprise, to promote their products.
