career in teaching came on in leaps and bounds. He became a deputy headmas

changed his mind. Mr Crossley explained: “ It did not take me long to realise there is no other place like it.”

Hy his own admission,

he quickly fell for the school’s family atmosphere and the strong loyalty shown by teachers, par ents and pupils alike. Mr Crossley has now

retired, after being told to take life a bit easier, hut does he regret not having fo l low ed his car e e r ambitions? " I do not regret not

moving on. I will say, with all sincerity, the 17 years I

was at the school were the happiest of my life,” he admitted. Mr Crossley said that,

once he knew Bowland was for him, he channelled his ambition into the school to help maintain its high standards and repu tation. He explained: "I transferred my personal feelings of ambition to the school, putting all my energies into it.” A native of Kochdale,

the post at Howland County High, one of the panel asked him how long lie intended to stay, to which he replied: “ five to seven years.” However, he quickly

and enrolled at night school. He then moved back to Rochdale to take up an administrative post at a juvenile court, when he decided to become a teacher. Hy the end of his court

service he had gained four A-levels at night school, as well as having passed the university entrance exami nation in English. I n 1 9 C -1 , he w a s

accepted at London Uni versity and graduated three years later with a B.Se. degree in economics.

His first post was in Cornwall as a housemaster

at Newquay Grammar School and, after two vears, he moved to Water loo Hoys’ Grammar School, Liverpool, where he spent a similar [>eriod as head of

the economics depart ment. In 1971, he moved to Hastingsbury Comprehen sive in Bedford, where he was in charge o f the reception pupils. Two years later, he

returned to the north west as head of the lower school at Tyldesley High School, Blackpool, and, after three years, was promoted to deputy headmaster. While at Blackpool, he

studied for a B.Ed. degree at Lancaster University and graduated prior to

Mr Crossley was educated in his home town and, after leaving school, started work as a clerk in Manchester. It was not long before he realised he needed

joining Bowland County High. After such a fast-mov

ing career, there is one thing Mr Crossley can really enjoy during his retirement — the high speed thrill of cars. Part of the clue to Mr

Crossley's extracurricular activities can he found in

the panama hat presented to him by the pupils as a farewell gift.

For car fanatic Mr

Crossley is planning to buy a Rolls-Royce Silver S p ir it and jokingly believes that a retired gentleman, driving such a car, should wear a hat

suited to the vehicle’s status. When the pupils heard

about his lifetime's ambi tion to buy the car, they suggested a chauffeur's hat, but he insisted firmly on the panama.

“ They presented me

with a microwave, which will help me keep one foot

in the technological age, and the panama hat will keep me in Miss Marple territory with the retired colonels," he said. Mr Crossley has had

about -Hi or 50 different cars over the years and the Rolls-Royce will prove to be the icing on the cake. However, rather than

devoting all his retirement time to the car, he hopes to turn his hand to writing. “ I want to be the James

Herriot of the education world by writing headmas ter's diaries. I have so many talcs to tell," he commented. Mr Crossley hopes to

get started on his first novel pretty soon and likes to think it will be a best seller, so do not be sur prised if, when browsing along the p:q>erbacks next time, you find a book enti tled "tine headmaster and his Rolls-Rovce."

Delighted to take up the reins

A MAN with interests ranging from youth

clubs to stamp collect ing, railways and fell walking is taking over the reins of Bowland County High School. Mr Steve Colling (45), of

governors. His teaching career

Rishton, is also a Method ist lay preacher, married to Ruth and a father of three children, Paul (19), a student at Aberystwyth University, and Sarah (16) and Rachel (13), both pupils at Norden High School, Rishton, where their father is also chair- an o f the s cho o l

began at Ormskirk Sec ondary Modern School where, between 1971 and 1973, he taught religious education. From 19i3 to 1977, he taught at Cross

Hall High School and was h e a d o f t h e R E department. There then followed

eight years at Skeimers-

dale T mvd Vale High School, now Lathom High School, where he was deputy head and later

head of the humanities faculty. From there he went to

Rhvddings High School, Oswaldtwistle, as deputy head. He is currently on secondment from that school to Countv Hall as appraisals co-ordinator. Obviously delighted by

his appointment at Bow land County High, which he takes up in January, he says that ne is looking to maintain the partnership with the local education authority and extend the partnership with the par ents and the community,

Mr Coiling

making Bowland a school for the community. "I have a lot of listening

to do,” he says, adding: "I ho]>e to continue the excel lent work begun by Gra ham Crossley.

1 • our Christianity is not reaching Others is it because it has not fully claimed us.’ We may need to look at life all over again. Those who wish to help to set the world to rights need to begin with themselves.

According to the teaching of Jesus, we

should not be too ready to judge and crit icise the conduct of others, but first clear

our own vision. Let’s face it. We all fall short of what might have been. I f our elforts in Christian living disappoint us, "'hat sorry failures we must appear to the searching eyes of God. What can we do about this state of

affairs? First of all, it is necessary to recognise that it exists und to feel" our need of God’s forgiveness. When convic tion of sin weighs heavily on our hearts, the only way to obtain relief is through confession, telling the Lord how sorry we are and accepting His assurance of help in coming days. In our prayer time, alone in our

Father’s understanding presence, we find that, even though we have despaired of ourselves, He has never let us go for being beyond redemption. It is then that we experience a feeling of deep relief and joy and indescribable grati tude. We know ourselves forgiven and have re-established communion with God, our Father. Are you saying: “ Is that all I have to

do — say and mean how sorry I am in order to obtain complete forgiveness?"

That's right. No amount of trying, ef self-sacrifice or strict discipline will ; us in this case. You feel that in common justice
