THE latest incarnation of M itsu b ish i's C olt is another one of those Far Eastern imports which offer small car conve nience with big car per- fo rm a n c e

refinement. The new three model
line-up features a 1.3-litre runaround, a 1.6-litre executive hatchback and a 1.8-litre slingshot capa ble of 130 mph. We tested the 1600
GLXi and couldn't help b e i n g e x t r e m e l y impressed with it. The new Colt features

a totally new engine with a few more cubic centi metres than its 1.5-litre predecessor. Adopting a single overhead cam shaft engine layout, the new GLXi power unit fea tures four valves per cylinder for improved fuel efficiency and overall
performance. With 111 bhp on tap,
the Colt is capable of 118 mph, yet returns fuel consumption figures of 50.4 mpg at a constant 56 mph and nearly 32 mpg on the urban cycle. The car looks good
from the outside — a roof-mounted spoiler
lending a sense of pur pose — and is very com fortable inside. The hatchback configuration means there is plenty of space for four adults and their luggage to travel in considerable style. A decent radio cas
sette, electric windows, sunroof and wing mirrors, remote release tailgate and petrol cap and cen tral locking all come fitted as standard. Performance is excel
lent, but what makes the Colt really appealling is
its fun factor. The car's a l l- ro u n d handling inspires confidence at an early stage. The steering is very positive and has plenty of feel, keeping the driver informed about what’s going on at the front wheels. The wide tyres ensure good road holding and as the cor nering speeds build up passive rear wheel steer ing keeps the car on the road when others would be getting close to the edge. In the final analysis
the new Colt is one of growing number of cars combining refinement and practicality with hot- hatch performance with- out the usual wallet b a shin g insu r a nc premiums. The model tested here
