Poppy appeal hits the jackpot again
THE Chatburn and District Poppy Appeal hit the jackpot this year, with
over £3,000 raised. Appeal organiser Mr Jack Altham told the
“Advertiser and Times” that thanks were due to the “loyal band of helpers, with trays of poppies and collecting tins,” who gave then

Friendly manner made her popular with customers
A LOW MOOR woman who was well known locally through her work as a salesjissistant with the North Western Electricity Board has died, aged S2, at St Ann’s Court.
Mrs Mary Elizabeth
Wrigley was born in Brook Street] Clitheroe. One of three ch i ld ren , she attended St Michael and St John’ s RC School, where she met her future husband,Joseph.
The childhood sweet
hearts were later married at St Michael and St John’s RC Church. Mrs Wriglev worked initially as a weaver at Chatburn Mill and during the war at the ICI works in Pimlico.
She was later employed
at a tailor’s in Moor Lane, before becoming a sales assistant with Norweb, where she worked for more than 10 years and her friendly personality I made her popular with the customers.
Outside work, Mrs
W r ig le y had m a n y interests. She was an accomplished baker and over a period of 30 years there was not a family member or friend who was not treated to a cake baked and iced by her.
Mrs Wrigley, who lived
in Woone Lane, Bolland Prospect and Edisford Road over the years, also enjoyed sewing and knit ting and was a keen stu dent of local history. She loved the Lancashire dia lect and never wanted to see the old Lancashire
dying. In addition, she was
keen on music, in particu lar Victorian ballads. One of her fondest memories was meeting the artist L. S. Lowry when he passed her house in Edisford Road and his print of old Clitheroe always enjoyed pride of place in her home.
Mrs Wrigley, who was a
widow, will also be remembered as a devoted
family member and friend, who looked after her par ents in their old age and always took a keen interest in those close to | her.
On assault charge
A MAN pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and a public order offence when lie appeared before Clith eroe magistrates. Russell Summers (27),
formerly of The Crescent. Clitheroe, is charged with assaulting his girlfriend and a police officer, as well as using threatening behaviour. The court heard that he
was also in breach of a bind-over. Magistrates adjourned the case until January Oth for pre-sen
tence reports. Summers was given bail
on condition that he resides at a given address in Blackpool, that he reports to Blackpool Police each Monday and Friday and that he does not approach his girlfriend or go within half-a-mile of The Crescent.
