FOR THE MAN OF GOOD TASTE

Peter Favell. Mr Favell, who has

traded in the town for six years, firmly believes that specialisation is the way to beat the recession blues.

He said: “ Clitheroe

needs to sell itself as being a specialised shopping

centre. I feel specialist

shops will be the winners of the 1990s. We can’t compete with the Arndales

of this world, so we have to sell ourself as some thing different.” He continued: “Clith

eroe can survive as a trad ing centre by encouraging people to do their specia lised shopping here. The Chamber of Trade is going to promote this idea very seriously next year.”

Specialist shops our attraction

Mr Favell — who with

his wife, Helen, owns Favell’s Picture Framers and Fine Art Publishers on King Lane — also believes half-day closing to be a thing of the past.

He said: “We need to

open six days a week, if we want to be taken seriously as a shopping centre, even seven days a week if necessary. We need visitors to come to Clitheroe and, if we want them to do so, we will have to change our attitudes.

“ It is important for us to

see opportunities which we, as a community, can take. Local traders must support the Chamber of Trade. It is time that trad- ers s ta r te d p u l l in g together. If we work together, our efforts will bear fruit.”

PLANNING to give Christmas shoppers a great night out on Monday . . . Mr Peter Favcll, presi dent o f Clitheroe and District Chamber o f Trade, and (above) traders who arc already getting into the spirit of things
