expect something extra special on her 90th birth day, even though she knew nothing about it. On reaching the parish

Festive touch
THERE was a festive touch at Clitheroe Garden Club when “Laughter by arrangement” was the title of the talk and demonstra tion by Graham Iddon, of Hesketh Bank. Members were not dis
appointed, as he made Christmas decorations fall
into place easily and his chat while doing them kept everyone amused. Swags, table centres, wall and door circlets all came together, seemingly with
out effort. At the annual meeting,
followed by the five of spades, the jack losing to the king and west playing the four. South led a heart, to let his partner cash the king if west had stalled with two hearts. Unfortunately, west ru f fed , drew trumps and entered dummy with a spade to cast his losing club on the queen of spades.
The winning defence is for . „ . r
south to lead a spade at trick three ami put the lead in dummy. Then, if west tries to throw a club on the queen of spades, north can trump and send back a club to defeat the contract. If west enters hw own hand by ruffing a heart, then draws trumps, he has no way back to dummy and has to lose
two club tricks. Winners on Thursday were.
