Mother’s plea for pelican crossing

A LOCAL mother has expressed concern over severe traffic congestion outside Clitheroe Royal Grammar

School. Mrs Richenda Ratcliffc, of West Bradford, whose

11-year-old daughter attends CRCS, believes a peli can crossing is desperately needed outside the Chat- burn Road site to prevent a serious accident. “ I am just aghast at the end of the school day to

see the turmoil of traffic outside the school. It’s horrendous between 3-15 and -1 p.m.,” she said. "There are queues of traffic both ways and chil dren have to cross the road to catch the bus. Because

of the congestion, i prefer my daughter to catch the bus, but 11 is a bit young to be crossing a busy road

without supervision or a crossing. “ I certainly don’t want her or any child to g e L

knocked down. I would prefer something to be done before that.” Mrs Ratcliffe added.

Bid to unite eczema

sufferers

A CLITHEROE mother is hoping to form a support group for families strug gling with the problems of eczema — and has issued an appeal for members as the National Eczema Society prepares to stage a special week to promote public awareness about the complaint,. Mrs Carol Booth, of

Seedall Avenue (Clitheroe 25752), whose 13-numth- old baby, Alison, has the complaint, is the local con tact for the society, which was formed 18 years ago to offer help to sufferers. National Eczema Week

begins on Saturday and Mrs Booth is inviting either parents of children with the complaint or adult sufferers to get in

touch with her if they need advice. “ I receive all the latest

information about eczema from the society and am able to supply literature on the subject. But I would also like to form a support group if enough people come forward.” she said. _______________

A sweet treat for

ladies THE Clitheroe Afternoon Townswomen’s Guild met in the parish hall on Mon day, when chairman Mrs E. Spain welcomed guest s p e a k e r M r J oh n Whittaker.

He told the enthralling

story of the evolution of Whittakers Chocolatiers

Ltd, of Skipton. It began in 1857 in Crossbills as a draper's and grocery shop and remained in the family through different stages, eventually moving to the present shop in Skipton.

His aunt Ida, as a very

young girl, learned how to make chocolates from a vicar’s wife in the village and tiiese were then sold in the shop.

Manv years later, Mr

Whittaker, as a young man, decided to change the nature of the business, believing he had the recipe for success — one quality product — chocolates they manufactured themselves.

Aided by his family’s

long standing good reputa tion. he took appalling risks for those days to raise capital for premises and machinery. It cer tainly paid off and the company now has huge commitments at home and

abroad. The meeting ended with

the hostesses serving tea and samples of the famous chocolates.
