HOT on the heels of the launch of its breathtaking XJ220, champagne corks are again popping at Jaguar as the company c e leb r a t e s its 70th

anniversary. It was in September 1922, in modest prem

H O N D A unveils its new sp o ils car, the C R X V T i. at the B ritish Motor Show at the N E C .

The new C R X sports convertible is a two-seater with a unique removable roof design, which gives open-top driving and a level of security and protection unavailable in any soft top model.

Honda decided from the outset that the C R X should he open-lopped, hut refused to accept a compromised design that was awkward in opera tion and usable onlv on simnv (lavs. So the C R X now boasts a rcvoliitinnnrv

detachable hardtop — a removable roof panel which stows safely in the hoot. The rear window is electrically operated, sliding down to disappear from view and further enhance the driving experience without buffeting.

Wind noise is muled thanks in part to sp e c ia lly designed door m ir ro rs , which deflect a ir around the cockpit.

According to Honda, the C R X is fast and fun to drive, with a choice of l.(>- hlre VTI5C engines giving it effort less performance with a handling package to match.

Producing more power

and torque, but lower emissions and fuel consumption, the new engines were designed to meet the wishes of 735i owners who expressed the desire for an eight-cyclinder car. This brace of eights will

Designed to take the strain out of parking in

town, the Zoom has a variable wheelbase. The two-seater car,

which has been developed in conjunction with Matra, aims to re-draw the parameters of car design for the 21st century, providing pointers to the future of tiie small city car.

The Zoom’s electric

and 750iL models. A t the rear, only the badging and

the different diameter exhaust pipes will reveal the car’s true identity. The range now starts

with the 188 blip' six-cylinder 730i and 730i S E , through the new 730i,

. 7J0i and 7'10iL, and is crowned by the 12-cylinder, 300 blip 750i and iL . Ju s t as more cylinders

make a smoother engine, the new car benefits from more gear ratios with a five-speed electro-hydraulic automatic gearbox. The

gearbox continuously “ talks” to the engine management system to . ensure smooth changes, and the extra gear gives a better spread of ratios for improved fuel economy and faster mid-range acceleration. The new engines are

designed to be as environmentally-friendly as possible. Emission levels are low enough to meet all expected regulations anywhere in the world and the unit is itse lf 97% recyclable.
