Rallying to their cause
RALLYING brothers Mark and Edward
Bentley have been in the thick of the action in the last month. Competing in a sin
gle venue stage race, at Flookbrough, the pair started well and had put their Ford Sierra 4x4 into first place after the first stage. H owever, on the
second s ta g e , the brothers endured a slight accident and rolled the car, which lost them over two minutes and dropped them down to 154th position overall. Undeterred, the nair
battled on and luckily did not suffer any more setb acks to claim eighth place overall and second position in class. In their second com
petition, at Trentham Gardens, Stoke-on- Trent, the Whalley pair again started at a blistering pace, setting quickest tunes on two early stages. However, on stage
three they suffered a puncture and had to drive for three-and-a- half miles on the rim,1 losing vital time in the1 process.
They put the trou
bles behind them for the rest of the event and duly started to claim the leader board, eventually claiming; sixth place overall and* a superb first place in4 class.

FACING high-flying Chadderton at Shawbridge, Clitheroe included new signing Paul Baker, from Great Harwood.

the Clitheroe second string b e g a n to tu rn t h e i r superiority into goals. Mercer opened the scoring when Green headed the ball into his path. Midway through the first
half Clitheroe extended their lead, when Mercer headed in a precise Paul Green cross. Good work from man-of-

tlie re-start, Clitheroe contin ued to press upfield. Colne rarely threatened to trouble the visiting defence, giving them an opportunity to help out up front. Andy King and Shaun Gannon provided
ammunition for the wingers and Ian Johnson came close with a couple of headers. The home defence eonliu-.
tied to buckle under the pressure enabling Pickles, and then Mercer to complete their hat-tricks. Colne finally responded with a long range shot which beat Nuttall, but this was brief respite from the Clitheroe onslaught. Pickles embarked on a run
which finished with the striker rounding the goal keeper, before blasting the ball into the empty net. The final Clitheroe goal was
put away by centre-half Ste phen Murphy. It was an easy victory for
the reserves who could have had more. However, the reserves improved their goal difference considerably with this win. Clitheroe Reserves: Nut-

Whalley refused to panic
and continued to press with well worked attacks, grabbing a deserved equaliser after 27 minutes. A corner was swung in from the left and Chris Stanley rose well to head towards goal. Although the ’keeper saved, Stanley was (iniek to pounce and stabbed tlie ball over the line from two yards.
Once again, Whalley let
their rear-guard slip and Wareing added the Judge’s second with another superb long-range strike.
, In the second half, Whalley

and Heduesford, on the tarmac. The Long Eaton race was held in terrible conditions,
with rain pounding down and making driving uncomfortable and hazardous. “The spray was so bad you could not see
anything in front,” said John. The driver did manage to claim first place in the heat
and second position in the final, but decided that condi tions were too bad for the Grand National and did not take part in the final race. The following day he travelled to Heduesford and in
better conditions claimed top four positions in the second heat, the final and the Grand National, taking his points tally for the weekend to around 70. This weekend he completes the season with races at Scunthorpe, Kings Lynn and Boston.
