How to avoid winter driving

pitfalls Sleek, stylish Safrane

RENAULT’S new executive express — the Safrane — had its UK launch last week.

The Safrane represents an £800

million investment by Renault to produce a spacious and refined large hatchback Lo replace the outgoing Renault 25.

Sleek exterior styling and a

smooth underbody ensure excellent aerodynamics for the Safrane, which has a Cd of between 0.28 and

: 0.30, depending on the version. Utilising transverse engines and a

front wheel drive layout, Safrane provides maximum cabin space in a compact package. Re-designed

suspension, both front and rear, together with pendulum engine

mounts ensure a smooth and quiet ride for the Safrane’s passengers. New five-speed manual and four- speed automatic gearboxes are

mated to a 135bhp multivalve two- litre engine or the smooth and pow erful 170 blip three-litre V(i unit. Three-way catalytic converters

are standard on all models. Internally, the Safrane’s occu

pants are “coecooncd” in a spacious and comfortable environment with a specially designed dashboard, which Hows into the door panels, and com plete with side impact bars. Equipment level are high, with

power-assisted steering, air condi tioning, anti-theft alarm system and ABS braking fitted as standard on

all models. Safety and environmental con

cerns were also paramount in the design of the Safrane, which passes strict impact testing and has all major parts marked for easy

recycling. Three versions of the Safrane are

currently available in the UK, the two-litre RT, two-litre RT Auto and the three-litre RXE. All come with an eight-year anti-corrosion war ranty, a 12-month unlimited mileage mechanical warranty and RAC membership.

WINTER can be a hazardous season on the roads. But, according to the AA, a few com mon sense precautions will cut the risks to motorists and their vehicles.

Here’s the AA’s tips on how to stay out of trouble on the road this

winter. • In fog, even the' most experienced

drivers can become disorientated and start trailing the lights of the car in front. It’s best to slow down and drive within the range of dipped headlights — full beam in fog benefits no-one.

O Fog can be especially dangerous on motorways, where queues of slow-mov ing or stationary traffic can build up without warning. Motorists should also be on the look-out for sudden patches of fog near woods, hollows, lakes and

rivers. • Flat batteries are one of the biggest

causes of vehicles breaking down during the winter. Batteries which are not

inside the car, together with a clean cloth for get ting rid of interior

condensation. • Windscreen wiper blades should be

replaced every 12 months and the screenwash treated with a freezing inhibitor — not antifreeze, which will corrode the car’s paintwork. 9 Regular servicing is another essen

tial preventative measure which many motorists overlook. Repairs caused by

neglect usually cost a lot more to put right than regular servicing in the long

run. • Sparkplugs, brakes and tyres

(including the spare) should all be checked and any stone-chipped pain twork treated before salt gets the oppor tunity to eat into the bodywork. • Spins, slides and skids are major

causes of accidents, but all can be avoided by driving more carefully. • On icy or snow-covered roads, pull

away in the highest gear possible to avoid wheelspin, and accelerate, deece- lerate and steer gently to prevent loss of control. Remember, ice may be lurking

should clean the terminals and connec tors and smear them with petroleum

•jelly to prevent corrosion. • Fuses can also cause problems

which are simple to rectify. Check the exact location of your car’s fusebox and always carry spare fuses. • Vision is another important factor

• Particular care is needed when driv

ing downhill on ice, when the driver should slow right down and select a high gear to reduce the risk of skidding

Engine of the future

VAUXHALL opened a new £190m. manufac turing facility at its Ellesmere Port plant at the beginning of this month for the production

of its new V6 engine. The new facility incorpo

rates the latest manufac-: luring techniques for the production of the new ECOTEC V6 power unit. Covering 37,000 square

metres, the production plant consists of six machining lines and two engine assembly areas. At full capacity, the

plant will employ up to 450 people producing a maxi mum of 135,000 engines,

the majority of which will be exported to Europe. The ECOTEC unit is an

entirely new engine, to be built exclusively at Elles

Peugeot’s protection plan

system will sound the car horn, flash the indicator lights and operate an electronic anti-start device. The same system is also available as a retrofit

accessory alarm, to be fitted to those 405 models man ufactured prior to the introduction of this feature. Peugeot dealers are also offering a further series ol security systems as accessories to its range. Known as the 100 series, they are available in three ddlerent versions, each offering a different level of protection

against ear crime. In addition to alarms, many Peugeot models now , , , ,

feature vehicle identity numbers engraved on the windscreen and backlight, making it difficult for

thieves to resell the vehicle. Another frequent target for thieves is the car radio,

which in all Peugeot models, now come equipped with a four digit security coding, rendering the the system

AUDI is shortly to add a new entry-level diesel to its

80 range — the Audi 80 TD. The TD will be offered at the same price as the

identically equipped petrol-engined Audi SO, creating a petrol or diesel choice at the entry-level price. Being £1,000 cheaper than the direct injection die

sel TDI, the TD brings the Audi 80 saloon within the reach of many diesel buyers for the first time. Powered bv a 1.9-litre 75 blip indirect injection

diesel engine", the TD features two important emis

sion-reducing features. An oxidation catalyst cuts carbon monoxide,

hydrocarbon and particulate emissions, while exhaust gas recirculation reduces emissions of oxides of nitrogen.

At a steady 5(i mph, the TD returns a frugal an.4 __

mpg, while figures for the urban cycle and motor way driving are 35.8 and 42.2 mpg respectively. The SO TD goes on sale at the end of this month, with prices starting at £14,694.

Cut price ‘green’ Uno

FIAT has just reduced the price of the Uno 1.4ic by more than £500, making it one of the most competitively liriced hatchbacks on the market.

The 5.9% price cut represents a rea lignment of this model into Fiat’s existing environmental policy, whereby Fiat customers are not charged extra for vehicles fitted witli

a three-way catalytic converter.

At a total price of £S,2S3, the Uno looks conspicuously good value.

Like all new Fiat cars, the Uno is available with a three-year paint

warranty, Fiat’s unlimited mileage one-year mechanical warranty, an eight-year corrosion protection war ranty and one year’s free Fiat AA Assurance membership.
