ers of Thorneyholme RC Pri mary School joined forces to stage a bonfire night bonanza in Dunsop Bridge on Friday. Not only did i t prove a highly successful social occasion, but if also provided valuable prac tical experience for the chil dren whose current topic at school is " f ire , ” with all the safety aspects. The bonfire was held near
the villa ge p la y in g fields. Many villagers joined in the fun and there was an abun dant supply o f gingerbread men, made by the infants, and other tasty offerings made by parents, including plot toffee, soup, beefburgers and hot dogs. Guide dogs The work of the Guide Dogs
for the Blind Association was the subject of a talk given to Whallev and District Trefoil Guild. ‘ Speaker Mr George Kay,
who has been blind for many years, told members^ o f his experiences with a guide dog over the last 11 years and explained how the dogs are trained and carefully matched to their owners. A vote of thanks was given
by Mrs Winnie Hawthornth- waite and refreshments were served bv Mrs Gloria Davies and Mrs kathlcon Colbourne.

Fitting display A large crowd of villagers
made the most of a fine night to e njoy Sabdcn’s b on fire celebrations on Saturday. The Holme Committee rose
to the occasion as usual, pro viding a huge bonfire and one of its best ever fireworks dis plays. The free show for v il lagers cost the hard-working committee more than £-120 on fireworks and a lot of time and effort in erecting the bonfire. The annual Guy Fawkes
competition attracted fewer entries than usual, but the standard was very high, giv ing judges Mrs Pat Ainsworth and Mrs Kathleen Jackson a d ifficult time. Winners were Aniv and Ryan B irk e t t , of B a d g e r W e lls C o t ta g e s ; Gemma Seed, o f Gardeners Row; and Sarah and 'Pom Scott, of Stuhhins Lane, all Sabden. Books for all A book fair to raise funds
for the NSPCC is to be held at St Nicholas’s Church Hall, Sabden, tomorrow night. New books for all ages and
all tastes will be on sale, many of them at less than half price, so there is a good chance of picking up some early Christ mas present bargains. The fair is being organised by the Sabden branch o f the char ity, which hopes that villagers will support it. Admission is free to the
fair, which runs from 7-20 to 0-20 p.m. Tea and biscuits will be available. ••

scope of colour and, as they reached Shady Walk, a mem ber explained how to make a whistle from a stout ash twig. Walking back to Sabden down White H il l they spotted a squirrel and admired the rock roses still in bloom.
